The future of the coaching staff

Opening post

If I am not mistaken, the current coaching staff took over in June 2018 and results have not been up to scratch. Of course there are other factors but judging from execution in the games, sometimes it seems the team plays without a clear plan or approach. For example, as recent as yesterday, the bowlers just seemed to be throwing it and hoping for the best.

All three main coaches honestly were not great during their playing days and I do not think they are good enough in terms of strategy and game plan. At best they are just trainers to me were Stuey can just throw a 100 balls to batsmen in the nets, but when it comes to how they strategize on how to approach a game, a match situation I do not see this being translated onto the field of play and the same can be said about the bowling department.

Are there any standards to which they have to live up to as coaches and who do they report to? It always seems as though it is business as usual, no pre or post match conferences where they face tough questions. This is not good for the development of the team. As it stands, the coaching staff has not been good enough and their CVs are not inspiring.

It is a big 2 to 3 years for us and we need the right people in charge. There has to be good coaches to nurture these youngsters and remove this culture of just showing up losing and no visible improvements. Cricket coaches need to have a very strong cricket brain and we are lacking very much there. They have lost enough and they must go. If Raza can go out in 3 consecutive TEST innings trying to hit a six, it shows a lack of accountability which further indicates how useless the coaches are to the players also.

He has not done as well as he'd hoped cricket-wise at Eastbourne which also limits his opportunities there. It puts into perspective how good Muyeye is, who broke every single Somerset school record there was to break.

Were Muyeye here he'd be getting way more recognition than Shumba or Madhevere yet he isn't even a regular in the Kent First Eleven. This is why one has to be so careful before you start prematurely labeling these local lads as world beaters.

There's quite a few players that will be reasonably comfortable against an Associate bowling attack, but a mere handful that will cope against the top 8 teams, that's next level. Madhevere is particularly good through off, which is where you get 90% of your deliveries so I'd fancy his chances more, although he's going to get it short into his armpit if Afghanistan do their homework.

Now that Rajput has got an extension let's just hope it comes good.

He made some brave changes in the Europe tour and after a long time Zimbabwe tasted some success. Let's not forget some impressive one off wins over Pakistan and Bangladesh as well and a test win over Afghanistan.

I'm just trying to be positive here. I hate that he has got an extension but there is absolutely no pont in crying over it now.

Rajput getting an extension tells you all you need to know about this board. They don't care about progression. They are happy with their yes man.

How could anyone come back from that Ireland/Scotland tour and think things were fine.

They talk about wanting to compete at the T20 and CWC, but that will not happen with this man in charge. We struggle against the associates, so there is no chance that he will be challenging the big boys.

We should have just given the job to this guy after all; 😂 Probably wouldn't have been any worse!

Also has no one even noticed that Rajput has achieved extremely little in his entire coaching career?

He was the team manager - not coach - when India won the first T20 world cup in 2007. But remember T20 was all a bit of a laugh and a joke then anyway. And he wasn't even a coach. And it was 14 years ago. Since then he's spent most of his time organising fixtures as a secretary in Mumbai and as a spokesperson for the Mumbai cricket association. He had a short stint with Afghanistan when they couldn't hire anyone else at the time. They binned him off pretty quickly too.

How has he actually managed to get a job with a Test playing full member as Head Coach? And how after dismal results for three years has he now managed an extension ffs?

Maybe he's got some incriminating photos of Takemore and Mukuhlani playing with each other in a back room at the ZC offices or something. 😂 :o

This is eye opening!

I just assumed he was another Dav Whatmore/Geoff Marsh type that had an esteemed background.

Turns out he’s a fraud.

Rajput was a part of coaching staff for Mumbai Indians for a few years, I think.

Ahh yes. In the first season I think, but got fired after being seen laughing during slapgate; https://gulfnews.com/sport/cricket/harb ... 1.61556127

So so far we've got;

Mumbai cricket secretary and spokesperson early 2000's

India U19 coach for 3 months in 2006

'Team Manager' of India during 2007 World T20

Sacked as Mumbai Indians coach 2008 for failing to control his players

Director of a cricket academy in India

Afghanistan coach for 13 months 2016-2017

India-residing, part-time Zimbabwe Head Coach May 2018-present

Has done very little of note for the entire decade before getting the job here really. Surely we could attract someone with a better CV than that?
ZCF Hall of Famer
Dave Houghton was/is the right guy for the job, there's some symmetry about it. He was instrumental in getting us onto the world stage and he's back 30 odd years later when we are realistically hanging on by a thread, let nobody tell us that we're not.

ZC have not provided an official statement on Rajput as yet. It's a shambles or an organisation.

We all know Rajput is a yes man. He will not develop the team nor grow it in any way. ZC are happy to have a yes man who does not challenge them nor ask of them to do any work. Why have a coach who asks for cricket balls and a strong retention policy when you can get one who buggers off to India and does not care what you do.

And there's still no official thank you note to BT too 😂 Shambles indeed. Obviously that thank you is not coming, we'll see what happens on 6th Feb at least.

Now that they've given Hondo the Tuskers head coach job, does that mean Zim are in need of a new national bowling coach?

I listened to the clubhouse end podcast tonight. Douglas hondo was one person being interviewed. Sean Williams apparently was set to play the latest 4 day logan Cup game but the doctor ruled him out last minute, said he hopes to see him for 50 over matches.

Nice interview by sikander raza also about people's opinions not mattering to him regarding senior players positions. He seemed very defiant and said that there was a fundamental problem or words to taht effect of organisations don't value the senior players contributions 😜🤔🤔

Not entirely sure how related this is but Sl is releasing Grant Flower and Mickey Arthur in favour of a local coach. Personally, I think its an awful move on Sri Lanka`s part at least with Mickey but Grant at least could be in the running for Zimbabwe?

I see the Yorkshire head coach has been suspended for a tweet he made in 2010, using the word Yid.
ZCF Hall of Famer
These international coaches presumably get well paid, but its a s**t life and you know at some point you're getting fired. Unless you win the WC you are 50:50 for keeping your job if you coach a full member side.

Just listened to this. Larry is very in with the board nowadays so it's a useful podcast for us to have to hear whats going on and what the vibe is. I found it funny when he talked about Williams being a consummate professional who 'always does his talking on the field' and 'always keeps his head down and doesn't get involved with any funny business or dramas'. That must have been sarcasm?!?!?! Or a dig at him?

Raza not mixing his words about senior players as well :o Good to see him being so honest and outspoken. He's right - people who think the seniors are past it and unvaluable - don't know anything about cricket. E.g. Mr Rajput.

I thought that was aimed at Craig ervine regarding the professional bit?

I found raza very elequent and engaged and obviously came out fighting regarding the senior guys.

USA has a better coaching set up than us. If you're telling me we can't get a decent coach, thats bullshit.

We still have no word on the failures extension.

With Mickey Arthur out of the Sri Lanka job after the Windies series, looks like Grant will be out of work. That massive experience he has had with Pakistan and Sri Lanka will surely need to be roped back in, even as head coach.
