The future of the coaching staff

Opening post

If I am not mistaken, the current coaching staff took over in June 2018 and results have not been up to scratch. Of course there are other factors but judging from execution in the games, sometimes it seems the team plays without a clear plan or approach. For example, as recent as yesterday, the bowlers just seemed to be throwing it and hoping for the best.

All three main coaches honestly were not great during their playing days and I do not think they are good enough in terms of strategy and game plan. At best they are just trainers to me were Stuey can just throw a 100 balls to batsmen in the nets, but when it comes to how they strategize on how to approach a game, a match situation I do not see this being translated onto the field of play and the same can be said about the bowling department.

Are there any standards to which they have to live up to as coaches and who do they report to? It always seems as though it is business as usual, no pre or post match conferences where they face tough questions. This is not good for the development of the team. As it stands, the coaching staff has not been good enough and their CVs are not inspiring.

It is a big 2 to 3 years for us and we need the right people in charge. There has to be good coaches to nurture these youngsters and remove this culture of just showing up losing and no visible improvements. Cricket coaches need to have a very strong cricket brain and we are lacking very much there. They have lost enough and they must go. If Raza can go out in 3 consecutive TEST innings trying to hit a six, it shows a lack of accountability which further indicates how useless the coaches are to the players also.

Haha wtf.

So he’s happy to pick up a salary from the Taliban? After all he did fighting political injustice in Zimbabwe? For someone so principled, this is a pretty unprincipled move.....

The former Zimbabwe Captain Andy Flower has joined the Afghanistan cricket bubble ahead of starting his consultancy role with the team for the T20 World Cup 2021.

WTF :o

‘It’s a pipe dream for Andy to coach the national team’

Nek Minnit he’s coaching the taliban.

This is not an indictment against anyone for decisions made.

But money has no conscience.

The behaviour of ZC should be testimony of this.

The Taliban are guaranteed to be meddling in their cricket already and the future of their women's cricket is zero.

Rashid Khan resigned as captain with immediate effect because he was not consulted on selection, there's proof in itself. He had it in his contract, bold move for a supposed 24 year old. 😂

Flower will be adding temporary legitimacy to something that surely has to tip upside down sooner rather than later, he's good at that. 😂 I'm sure they will be offering him a chunk of cash. If they go down 9 zip they might cut his head off.

Flower actually put Takashinga on the map and despite what happened at ZC, Takashinga owe him big time, they wouldn't have won a single game without him and there would probably be a very different look to our cricket without the dominance of bang average Taka's players always getting selected.

I'd be surprised if he gets those Afghan players to match to his military tune unless the Taliban let him coach with a long knife in his hand
ZCF OriginalLegend
Flower would obviously have been in the UAE for the tournament. He was probably approached by the Afghan board to help as a consultant. We don't know the inner workings of the deal, so can't really speculate.

We all know Flower would be great for Zim, but ZC are too arrogant to want to mend hatchets or build bridges. Bill Flower was a pioneer for cricket in this country and ZC have just taken it and made it their club. No way they want to give back to the Flowers.

Money talks. Everyone has their price, clearly.

I see some female Afghan soccer players who were in Pakistan have been given UK visas because they claim (rightfully) that they're at grave risk if they return home.

The one -off Afghan Aussie test appears to have been called off because of their stance against women's cricket and there's a fair chance that a couple of the big teams may boycott their T20 matches against Afghanistan in the WC.

It does seem very odd that Flower is going down this rabbit hole, there's no obvious upside.
ZCF Hall of Famer
What with Wokeness being as it is, he could possibly find himself with limited prospects after this.

ICC are going to be under some pressure to make a statement fairly soon about their stance, they're morally bankrupt themselves so they'll spin a yarn initially. It's a very interesting development and I'm sure is going to benefit us.

I think the PCB was ready to hand the Pakistan national team coach job to Andy Flower on a platter a few months ago and if the rumors are to be believed, he refused it to make himself available for short term gigs around the world? Historically, the PCB top job has been a bit of a dead end for coaches with the Pak team continuing to remain mercurial and unpredictable, and also given that he might have had to spend a lot of time in the country, it was a practical decision. So too is this one. A payday for a short stint.

What amazes me is, what makes these cricket boards think that they can bring someone on as a consultant for a month and they can make a difference? Surely, they know that is not possible? For the coaches, they have no hesitation in taking it up because they can never be blamed for not getting the results. They can just brush off any criticism saying that it was a very short stint. It is a win-win for the coach and no gain for the boards. Crazy, if you think about it.

Afghanistan aren’t expecting any results or possibly even any work or consulting at all for him. It’s almost certainly just to try and add legitimacy to them and their World Cup participation.

Honestly it’s really sad. It’d be sad for anyone to go and abandon their morals and get a payday from the Taliban , but for it to be a man who once risked his life and career for political morals - it particularly stings.

You guys are forgetting a great political maxim that went something like: In politics/global affairs, there are NO permanent alliances, only permanent interests.

Pretty sure Flower's arm band stunt was merely a well thought out exit strategy, Olonga's less so, there was a lot of naivety in that.

A lot of unfair bashing of Andy here. Not here to defend or legitimise the Taliban, but none of us know the deal that Andy has struck. The ACB could be operating independently or any payment could be coming from a different source other than Afghanistan.

Remember, the ACB board has been around before the Taliban took over so any money they have is what is in their coffers. The suggestion that this is all Taliban would then be implying that it is government controlled which would require immediate suspension of the board and team, and them kicked out of all tournaments.

Not if the assumption is the same one used by BCCI vis a vis the PCB. They refuse to contribute money towards the PCB because of the PAK government's actions. And this is approved by the ICC. But if the PCB is separate from the government, then it's a moot point. If on the other hand the PCB and the government are the same entity, the ICC would in theory have to suspend PCB if they were to suspend the AFG board for the reason stated by some ZCFers.

I don't like BCCIs stand on Pakistan. I grew up watching those India - Pakistan games and nothing can beat that excitement, even now when Pakistan are not as good as they were in the past.

It has been 14 years we last played a test against them, an entire generation of fans have missed out on the greatest rivalry of all time. It absolutely sucks. As a kid Tennis was my favourite game followed by cricket, and I can't imagine liking cricket as much had it not been for Ind-Pak games.

Not sure if you are agreeing with me or against it. I think we all know the BCCI and PCB issues go much deeper than cricket and a bit hard to be compared to ACB.

Neither. Just stating my opinion on the matter. Just saying that the cricketing part of the argument is identical here. If the ACB are to be suspended for the reasons cited on this board, then PCB also has to be suspended based on the allegations of the BCCI. In fact, the BCCI had tried to get the Pakistanis kicked out of the World Cup, but I think the ICC refused to budge from their neutral stance by allowing the BCCI special exception to not play PAK bilaterally, but not going so far as to ban the PCB altogether from international cricket.

Yeah, that's not going to fly. BCCI making allegations is not enough, especially as ICC stand to lose more from kicking out the PCB. Also, BCCI aggravations against Pak come from more than cricket.

Which is also what I am saying with ACB. There are a lot of allegations, no concrete proof.
