The future of the coaching staff

Opening post

If I am not mistaken, the current coaching staff took over in June 2018 and results have not been up to scratch. Of course there are other factors but judging from execution in the games, sometimes it seems the team plays without a clear plan or approach. For example, as recent as yesterday, the bowlers just seemed to be throwing it and hoping for the best.

All three main coaches honestly were not great during their playing days and I do not think they are good enough in terms of strategy and game plan. At best they are just trainers to me were Stuey can just throw a 100 balls to batsmen in the nets, but when it comes to how they strategize on how to approach a game, a match situation I do not see this being translated onto the field of play and the same can be said about the bowling department.

Are there any standards to which they have to live up to as coaches and who do they report to? It always seems as though it is business as usual, no pre or post match conferences where they face tough questions. This is not good for the development of the team. As it stands, the coaching staff has not been good enough and their CVs are not inspiring.

It is a big 2 to 3 years for us and we need the right people in charge. There has to be good coaches to nurture these youngsters and remove this culture of just showing up losing and no visible improvements. Cricket coaches need to have a very strong cricket brain and we are lacking very much there. They have lost enough and they must go. If Raza can go out in 3 consecutive TEST innings trying to hit a six, it shows a lack of accountability which further indicates how useless the coaches are to the players also.

No use i think. They going to say that they want continuity in coaching setup and used this series as a experimental series :( 😂

We've been having experimental series for 20 years 😂

Bertus has written some good points on his twitter reg issues in ZC.

Honestly guys, what upsets me is the lack of player involvement. They just do not look like a team willing to do something big, they just look like a bunch of players who turn up because it's part of their job and just go back to the hotel once it is done. Absolutely nothing more than that.

Here's what this board are facing- in a few years time, possibly after the 2027 WC there's a very strong possibility we will lose our full membership and we will most definitely have our allocation cut significantly.

If that sad day was next week they'd still do nothing about it because well, its next week, it's not now!

If you could wave a magic wand and produce 15 star cricketers that would win us the world cup, but they had to come with a board of competent administrators that would work tirelessly for 5k a month and turn our cricket around and all the board had to do was take a mill ea golden handshake and disappear, they'd fight you tooth and nail.

That tells you all you need to know.

Yeah, that's basically how it looks. And if that is the mentality all around, there is no hope.

Who's Bertus?
ZCF Hall of Famer
Dutch journalist, think I’ve seen him on the forum sometimes

Makes a very good point about our next coach and that maybe we should look for someone who knows how to win as and beat other associates rather than getting a top 8/IPL mega coach. He’s right. We are where we are and we need someone who can help us consistently beat Ire, Sco, Ned, Nam etc in the short term. Brutal reality

Plot twist….I think Rajkumar is Rajput.

Raj should read Vaj
Legend
Rajput appointed as Afghan coach from 25th June 2016 to 31st August 2017

His stats with Afghan team

Odis - 23, Won - 11, Lost - 9, NR - 3, Series Wins - 3, Win % - 47

T20Is - 14, Won - 11, Lost - 3, Series Wins - 3, Win% - 78

Dont think that everyone is idiot here . You might be knowing everything about Zimbabwe Cricket that doesnt means you will put false claims for others without knowing anothing. Coaches appointed for afghanistan generally stays for lesser time because of security and visa issues, only few of them has been fired, most of them have left the job. Googlykava or Googlykadza getting mad after hard bang from Nepal & Namibia

Any news if dion myers is making himself available for the afghanistan matches or world cup qualifiers?

It would also depend on selectors as he has only played NPL recently and wasnt pulling up trees in his last international stint.

However think he will be a great player in time if he is still motivated

He's at it again....

Hot on the heels of an embarrassing defeat to an associate nation, Zimbabwe face a major international series with a very strong Afghanistan team.

What is our esteemed head coach doing during this time to turn around the fortunes of the team?

Amongst all the bad things in ZC, this fellow has to be the most embarassing of all. 🤦‍♂️

Also shows how shameless ZC board is, the only board who doesn't give a s**t about it's own team performance. Every single cricket board other than ZC is serious about its cricket.
ZCF Hall of Famer
He must have the loosest coaching contract ever not to have breached it somewhere along the line.

He seems to appear for coaching a few days before the team is due to play and I would doubt there's any performance clauses in there.

It's entirely disrespectful what he does. If he had a jot of integrity he'd take a settlement and walk. I guess he's signed up for the qualifiers and we are stuck with him.

I think he gets around 15k and ZC are not going to now find another 10-15k guy to replace him and be paying double. I'm still not sure how coaches and admin get 15-20k each and national players get 1-3k. Something very wrong with that picture and it's why we are in this position. The chefs and the slaves. The scourge of Africa- guys would rather be atop a dungheap than not be in charge at all. Self interest only, and in a sport no less. From guys who've already squirreled away piles of cash, but its not enough. They've taught the next generation as well, so there's not much hope for us.

No coach has ever made much difference to the outcomes, but the absence of a formal batting and bowling coach is shameful.

I guess ZC feel that the personnel they currently have will suffice, and even that's a grey area. I guess Matsi is the acting coach and he's being assisted by Chawaguta and Dave H is hovering in the background. Just call him the new coach and call Ratshit a consultant.

Something must have happened with Doug Hondo because he's been removed from bowling coach but I'm sure he's still on the payroll. That would indicate a disagreement somewhere.

Who is turning our misfortunes around? It's just crisis management. They've waited for things to implode and should be now scratching their heads. Maybe they aren't? The solutions for today should have been implemented ten years ago and we absolutely don't have another ten years to start them now. If we did they still wouldn't do anything meaningful. It's beyond their skill level and they don't have the will for it. Long term planning does not exist anywhere in Zimbabwe. Until we see an Academy with a decent coach, facilities and young guys with real ability we know they're not remotely serious. The coach has to pick the players he wants as well, not a cousin who's due a favour. You can't make an international calibre player out of a guy that does not have the goods to begin with. They'll keep trying but it's completely impossible. A correctly managed Academy may well produce two or three good players in two years time. Those are good odds, odds that every cricket set up world wide are happy to invest in, but not in the eyes of ZC clearly.

I wonder if they thought they'd beat Namibia even with players missing? I actually thought Namibia would beat us by a wider margin and I'm not trying to be funny.

I'm sure they will excuse the Namibia series by claiming we were missing players.

I wonder what the mood is in ZC for this Afghan series?

We are surely heading for even darker times. Preparing green tops as people have suggested is not going to work, they've got guys that bowl 140 plus, 15kph faster than our guys! Ask any batsman what a difference 15kph is 😂 Its the difference between uncomfortable and downright dangerous.

I strongly urge against that plan, guys will get hit. They've got world class spinners as well. The only quick fix is to plough the pitch so everyone is equally f***ed 😂

That's only half a joke, by the way. If you want to level the playing field a bit then prepare a pitch that sticks, makes it equally hard for all the batters. Low scoring 50/50 games.

I was reminded yesterday that the last u19 game we lost against West Indies means we now have to qualify for the next u19 WC which is next year. If they don't get a squad together pronto and start doing some serious work it's the last WC we will play in. The quality of school cricket is so s**t that if they don't start getting some youngsters into club cricket we are doomed. Are they even remotely interested? Secret assures me there are some batsmen lurking around but I'm yet to see one.

When you cut off the source of our players it's finished. This is yet another crisis right here that needs urgent attention.
ZCF Hall of Famer
Ya, will be competing with Namibia for the single African qualifier spot for the next u19 wc. That will be tough

It’s all so depressing 😂

This sounds like a death knell. Having to qualify for the U19 CWC. And if we don't get direct entry like before, all those guys who want to use U19 to showcase their skills at the very least would also not care.
ZCF Hall of Famer
Ok I didn't know it was Namibia we were up against. I'd hazard a guess that most of their players go to top cricket schools in SA. We know how this will end.

Will it be a one off game or best of 3 or what?

Surely Nigeria are also in the mix? Sounds bizarre to mention them, but they would also be a threat.
