Opening post

Zimbabwe heads into 50-over mode for the next couple of months, with The Pro50 starting in the morning.

The first double round (11th & 13th November) sees;

Tuskers Vs Eagles @ Bulawayo Athletic Club

Rhinos Vs Southern Rocks @ Kwekwe Sports Club

These are the first franchise games in any format to take place outside of Harare for a couple of years.

Full fixtures/venues here;

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/pro ... e-fixtures

Double round-robin with a grand final on January 7th.

Defending champions are the mighty Rhinos, who won their first ever silverware in this competition last season.

@SecretZimbo

So give me some names of good schoolboy batsmen to look out for.

I'm not seeing any in Harare.

I mean I'm not sure any of these will end up world class, but these are who I'd expect to see in or near the squad in 2024;

There's Liam Mudenda of course, who's one of the best we've had at his age. He'll be 17 in 2024, but idk what his plans are - He's too good for us. But then his grandfather is Jacob Mudenda so I guess they'll be embarrassed if he flees to England or wherever. 😂

Panashe Taruvinga will be 17 in 2024 as well.

Sean Bennet from Peterhouse (younger brother of the twins) is a promising opening bat, think he keeps wicket as well?

Tyde Stirrup from St John's looked really good a couple of years ago as a 14-year-old. Hit a big big century against Falcon in the last game before Covid arrived.

Kohl Viljoen is a keeper-bat. Related to Dirk apparently - presumably his son?

Matsikenyeri's son is a similar age as well, I've heard he's good, but I've never seen him.

Ben Williams. Again, pretty good family experience haha. Think he bats and bowls. He's at Falcon.

Taurayi Zimunhu from Falcon as well.

There's several sets of brothers. The Martell's, the Patel's and the Nyamhuri's (SA-based). Think they are all pretty much all-rounders, as usual at this young age.

Dylan Nzvenga Another from Falcon

Brandon Sunguro, opening bat was at Prince Edward. Think he's gone to South Africa though on scholarship.

Saxon Pettican - All rounder. He's one of those annoying kids that is good at several sports and very academic though. Not sure he'll stick with cricket. Played in the NPL for Queen's last year as a 15 year old.

As for out and out bowlers, I'm not so sure. Matt Schonken from the current squad will still be eligible in 2024 though.

The down side will be badly sunburned Poms, 7 with alcohol poisoning at least once, one gone to a crocodile, 2 having to flee because they've impregnated local lasses, and 3 refusing to leave.

😂 😂 😂

You're right though, getting those counties here pre-season would be great. f***ing Covid, hey.

I think the richer counties go to Dubai/Oman etc these days. Would like to think Houghton could definitely get Derbyshire here again if people ever get over this sodding virus though.

If ZC could function relatively credibly, I'm sure counties would be happy to send guys out to play in our domestics as overseas as well. Big confidence booster for these guys if they come and dominate, and surely it's better than spending six months in an indoor cricket centre in rainy England? Even if these 'Overseas' are just people with some Zim links, like Compton and Curran.

I see Welch is in Harare and almost fit after his lengthy injury. I wonder if he'll fancy a game here before he goes back?

Thanks for that list, very comprehensive. I will endeavour to watch them. Did Saxon Pettican not feature on this forum for doing well in Club? I remember guys being intrigued about his name.

Ya it doesn't make sense to go back to indoor winter training with Covid restrictions, but unless you're actually playing FC I don't think there's an excuse to stay. Plus I'm sure he'd need their physio to give him the all clear to actually play a game. Last time he was here he missed a couple of games because whichever franchise it was delayed signing some forms that confirmed he was registered as an overseas player.

Ian Botham loved it here, as did Darren Gough. I've had a few beers with both of them. Gough was a naughty guy, loved a pint and loved our girls even more. They were often at OG's.

Gough into the brown sugar?

Haha who knows, he was actually shagging one of my good friends. She still talks about him with a fond look in her eye. 😂

I’ve heard people in Australia gush about how hot white Zimbabwean girls are.

This always intrigued me becaus there isn’t many there I don’t think.

White population of today seem heavily on the older side.

Just me or has lockdown not been kind to him?

Compare him to the karate kid who’s now 60.

They all come back for Xmas. The boys fondly call it the Salmon Run.

Gough is over 50 now. That's sharp for a 50 year old.

I read an interesting article about ageing. You age in 3 main stages, not much happens in-between.

It really wouldn't take much effort to add one more camera and maybe a commentator and these streams could do good business in the sub continent for sponsorship, especially for List A/T20 games.

Absolutely no one at ZC thinks this way. Entrepreneurship in Zim is still stuck in the early 2000s. Brains working at 5% capacity

Ya, very annoying. It wouldn't really cost that much or take too much effort to produce something like this for the domestic white ball games;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrSzpgF ... bweCricket

Couple of cameras, one commentator. 175,000 views for a one-sided, poorly advertised Women's match.

Just seems like a really obvious opportunity to try and increase visibility and bring some sponsor money in.
