Till now Taibu & Williams are the most successful international cricketer for Zimbabwe among the captains of Zimbabwe Under 19 cricket Team.

I don't have a clue about Lake, Higgins Roche.. It's quite dissappointing that they have represented Zimbabwe not so long ago but are no where in the picture now. All just go to UK and play some club level cricket, they will never get to play for England, considering how strong their own players are right now.

I liked Mark Vermeulen, should have played a lot more for Zimbabwe.

Expectation was high from young captain like Nkala, was expected to be among top upcomming allrounders on the likes of Razzaq, Watson in that 2000 era, had a great Under 19 world cup in South Africa taking 16 wickets becomming top wicket taker in that tournament.

Mawoyo had the technique and test match mentality, concentration, surprisingly played less test matches then expected

Kind of annoys me when people say 'just se club level.' The club scene here in the UK is extremely strong and the premier divisions play some seriously hard fought cricket. They don't just walk into pub cricket, get fat and forget how to play. That's why I was keen for Murray to come back if he had been playing club cricket, the standard is high.

Our club has just signed a knights fast bowler while a club in our prem have signed Justin Kemp for next year!

Can you explain why England isnt that good at test cricket despite such a strong domestic set up?

I mean they are still pretty good. But likely to do with the fact they play all their county 4-day games in April and September when the pitches and conditions are s**t. They put way too much value on white ball at county level.

As for the thread, errr, nice list you’ve made. But what’s your point, Naidu?

Just to clarify, you are on a zim cricket forum, as a SL fan, and you are questioning the quality of the 4th ranked test side in the world and how good they are?

I was thinking that 🤣

The thing is, UK club cricket is so well supported by the ECB and local communities, England will always have a strong player pool. The standard of cricket I've played this summer has been bloody high, and we're in the Premier division next summer. It's a breeding ground for mentally tough, young cricket stars and that's why the England will always be strong. Sure, they'll go through transitional periods but they'll always recover

If Sloan is right then it would be as a result of strength in numbers being a big cricketing nation with alto of imports.

But I question it too from the outside. County isn’t that strong. A lot of 40 yr old plodders about.

Yes they are all good players but I guess it’s relative to what you expect of a first class standard.

So I’m thinking of county is county and county seconds is the big drop we know it is, how can club be that strong?

Its all relative. Club cricket is strong for the overwhelming majority of players, but yes the step up from club to County 2nds to County and then Internationals gets progressively more massive.

Another way to think of it:

Imagine all the males aged 15+ in England who sign up to play serious cricket...big number right? Probably a few hundred thousand. Maybe just 1% are good enough for high end club cricket, meaning 99% aren't. So lets assume that leaves 3000 club cricketers. What percentage of them would be good enough for County 2s? Maybe 5% if we are being generous. Then perhaps 10% of them would good enough for County Firsts, and then 5-10% of the remaining would ever get an England cap.

No need to be aggresive. England were playing with guys like Crawley and SIbley a few matches ago. I was being genuinely curious.

Not being aggressive. I think it paints more of a picture about SL and Zim if you think those players are poor, and England are still a very competitive Test side. Wouldn't be questioning the quality of England.

I would trust sloans word more I reckon. He has been around the scene for a while and is involved in the game in depth in England. He plays in the leagues too, so I think he would have a better idea of the quality than those of us who watch from afar, see a clip or two on tik tok or youtube of village cricket and think all England domestic cricket is that way.

I do trust his word. That is why I asked him for his opinion.

I never said SL and Zim arent poor either. Bro, theres clearly some aggression here. But its fine, I think I asked in a bit of a dickhead tone.

Nope, I didn't mean it's not competitive solan, they might even be getting paid handsomely, but from an outsider point of view I mean, I don't know them, internationally their visibility is zero.

Compare that with someone who represents Zimbabwe, might be just an above average cricketer, but gets international recognition, gets to play in ICC world events, get to face different opposition and play around the world which makes you even better as a player, if they are really good then they can get some lucrative T20 contracts, the world knows about you. You get into record books, and the best thing is that you actually do something to make your country proud.

Here they are just settling for quiet career in some county and that is that, they will end their career just like that. I mean it is just a thought. I would prefer representing my country than doing some county stuff.

Dude, I am seriously not being aggressive.

You phrased your question, "why are they not that good" and picked on specific players to prove your point, so you may have been asking his opinion seriously, but you asked with your opinion already formed.

Zimbos you did kinda overreact to his question. He's never tried to hype SL and is a very passionate ZIM fan. No need to hit him below the belt.

No dramas mate, I'm just saying, the English club system is seriously strong right now, especially the Premier divisions. I'm in the Cheshire Prem next summer and I've already been told its going to be a serious standard

Well yeah my opinion had been formed. But Sloan had me rethinking it, so I asked him to expand. Thats all

If i was hitting below the belt, I would make it obvious. I have nothing against slc, but it just takes some context before posting something.

He could easily have said, "genuine question, is the current 4th ranking deceiving to the quality of depth England have or is it highlighting a lacking?"
