Opening post

Just for some fun,

In the wake of the ‘emerging’ side that had some players who were anything but, who arr the players who started out with promise, but fizzled out worse than High Hefner’s erection when the Viagra wore off.

Current players only.

For me;

1. Chamu Chibhabha (c)

2.Tino Mawoyo (I had to double check that he was still an active!)

3 Richmond Mutambami

4. Sikander ‘Mystery man’ Raza

5 Tarisai Musakanda

6 Kevin Kasuza

7 Tino Mutombodzi

8 Richard Ngarava

9 Natsai Mshangwe

10 Chris mpofu

11 Tendai Chatara

I’ve no doubt missed a few.

I’ve also tried to avoid players like Maruma who never had any flocked of brilliance on the up. He’s just stayed consistently decent at Logan cup level and not international. Doesn’t count.

bit harsh on chatara, ngrava and raza imo

Very harsh on Ngarava in particular. If anything he has a lot of potential to improve and I'm pretty confident he will.

I actually agree on Raza. His bowling has definitely declined since he tried to be Narine hiding the ball all the time.

Yeah, this lineup is a bit harsh, Raza has had a good career, even featured in lucrative global T20 competitions. Mpofu over-achieved for his modest talent. Musakanda has always been a forum favoutite but has barely done anything on note. My lineup would be

1. Sibanda (excellent technique, poor temperamemt)

2. Mawoyo (could occupy the crease for ages but never established himself as a solid opening batsman)

3. Masakadza ( test 100 on debut and sporadic performances thereafter)

4. Coventry (one-time ODI batting world record holder, could have achieved more)

5. Mufambisi (crisp batting technique, but like Sibanda, no temperament)

6. Chibhabha (good batting and medium pace bowling technique, could have been Zims answer to Jacques Kallis, but unfortunately too narcissistic and entitled)

7. Neville Madziva (a genuine match winner, could close out the batting and was a good dearth bowler, just faded away)

8. Muzhange ( showed glimpses of dearth bowling which would have suited T20 cricket, also faded away)

9. Mavuta (promising spin bowling allrounder, his technique needed work, but he did shine vs SA and got himself a lucrative Mzansi T20 contract)

10. Nyumbu (one time fan favourite, suspect bowling action)

11. Vitori (read Nyumbu)

3/4 of those are (sometimes longtime) retired?

ah i missed the current too

If we are just doing current, then Mawoyo retired a couple of seasons ago Doggy!

I’ve enjoyed his commentary in the Pakistan and Bangladesh series though. Hope that doesn’t decline too! 😂

Did he retire? I though the was technically still playing?

If this list was made 6 months ago Luke Jongwe would have been the biggest flop in recent history. He played so many games at the beginning, got something like 5 wickets for 6 runs against Afghanistan then completely disappeared. Crazy how a few months can change everything.

Tari Musakanda is probably the most disappointing now on the current list.

True, I don't think he's ever announced retirement. But I mean he hasn't played for two years and seems like he has his fingers in a lot of different pies now; coaching, commentary and a foundation. Can't see him playing again tbh.

He's a smart guy and I think pretty honourable. ZC could do worse than getting him involved with something somewhere.

Yes, Tino told me himself a few months ago that he has retired from playing; he is now found in the commentary box!

I'd be inclined to include K-long in the list.

Not sure if Kasuza is declining. He is pretty much going along as ever.

He started off with a bang.

I have a vague memory of him hitting a 20 ball fifty or so in his debut year when he was a 16 year old or thereabout.

He also worked himself up to a test call up in the Sri Lanka series but couldn’t maintain it.

So you could pick him twice.
ZCF OriginalZCF Hall of Famer
😂 sure. He tends to have a good year and then a bad year. So he is constantly rising and declining I suppose

Tino now seems to be playing a stint in the Nairobi League in Kenya along with quite a few other Zimbo oldies!

Who else is playing in the Nairobi league? I saw a Neil Mugabe on a scorecard playing for Stray Lions.

How did he manage that? Was he not in the commentary box in BD just a week ago for the NZ series? No travel quarantine requirements in Kenya? Did he directly travel there from BD?
