[Match Thread] Zimbabwe v India: 1st ODI

Overall, a good performance by Zimbabwe, it left a lot to be desired but good nonetheless. Thinking about the positives, Raza Butt played quite well and the opening partnership is a major positive that the team should draw a lot of confidence from. In such situations when the team is off to a fine start, I think Taylor should take the initiative and promote himself to number 3 in order to capitalize on the relatively good start (in terms of wickets lost at least). As far as bowling goes Chatara impressed me considerably, he bowled with a lot of energy and zip. It would have been better if he was assisted by some good bowling from the other end to tighten the screws so to speak, since building up the pressure from both ends is vital to force errors from batsmen.
As far as the Men in Blue go, another clinical performance along expected lines, couldn't have asked for anything less from the world champions. The debutant Rayudu played exceedingly well and showed why he is rated so highly. Its unfortunate that he's got his chance so late in his career because of all the world class batsmen India have to chose from. However as they say, better late than never and he's come to the party at the right time.

Good to see Raza and Chigumbura do well with the bat today. A game that looking at the scorecard seems like we performed respectably. We however were never close to winning or testing India. India probably could have won within 35 overs if they had wanted to.

We weren't embarrassed. It was a stock standard ODI loss that you could expect from any team - considering Zimbabwe are always a chance of ending anywhere between 6/40 and 120 all out that's not a bad result.
I believe that Zimbabwe can win a match in this series. As mentioned on commentary, we made nearly 230 without a contribution from Taylor. Not often does that happen. If he fires and one of Masakadza/Williams/Sibanda puts a score together we'll be looking at a much more challenging total.
The bowling was a bit below par but not too bad. I think India could have been more aggressive if they wanted to, but then again the moment they started playing a few shots they lost wickets - so perhaps 4.5 an over was as high as they could take it without taking undue risk. It will definitely be interesting if they bat first in the next game as it will bring the bowlers into the game a bit more.
They looked pretty comfortable against the spinners, so I'd bring in Vitori for Mutumbodzi. I'd like to see some more aggressive field placements too. I didn't agree with the commentators that a slip would be handy (they were in no danger of edging anything) but a short mid on would have taken away that easy single. Just something to make the batsman have to think.

I'm just going to throw it out there that Chatara excited me today. He was clearly rushing the batters for pace, and the swing he got was excellent. Well bowled. Woould bring Vitori in also, just to see if he can extract some nip and bight

Didnt get to see the match but looks like the early morning conditions really effected the match with Zimbabwe scoreing very slowley at the start, good to see Raza score 82 hopefully he can build on this innings .... Thinking Taylor should have batted @ 3 ????
Looks like the boys didn't have enough runs on the board to build enough presure maybe Vitori for the next match only problem with having 3 quicks is that none of them can bat so Zim are left with a long tail ...... Shingi could have been useful to add some extra batting with his seamers

There have been a few calls of BT at 3 in the thread, but I, for one, think that sending in Williams at 3 in that match situation was a masterstroke, ahead of Masakadza and Taylor. It just didn't work out as planned. Both Masakadza and Taylor take time to settle down before they start scoring freely, while Williams generally hits the road running with a lot of singles and rotates the strike very well. But the plan failed yesterday. Mind you, if it was an early wicket, I would stick with Hamilton at 3.

Yeah I think in limited overs matches you really need to "float" your batting order to suit the match situation ...... I would have sent in BRMT because he is the best batsman in the team and the longer he is out there the better it is for Zimbabwe ....... I would actually bat him @ 3 in ODI's all the time with Hammie opening with Vusi, but I know he prefers batting @ 4
If Craig Ervine was still around I'd have him @ 4 then Williams then Waller ( just in front of Raza ATM ) with Chigs that would be an awesome middle order

If he is bowling at good pace now without it, he should be able to bowl even quicker when this issue is adressed, or not?

Well it's been a long time since I saw Virat Kholi and Dhawan rushed for pace, but it was evident that against Chatara they have less time than they expected. Anybody remember Chatara in that T20 against India in 2010 ? His international debut ? He was using his left arm very highly there and was bowling 140Kph! I bet he wasn't too far off that yesterday on a couple of occasions

The left arm is indeed doing a bit more there.
Now, if Vitori is fit (?) to supplement Chatara/Jarvis and we win the toss, we could really give the Indians a hurry-up in the next matches. :D

But yea a trio of Jarvis, Chatara and Vitori sounds mouth watering. I reckon Meth would have thrived on that wicket, especially with the new ball making it talk and swing around a bit

Sounds like he needs some one to point out his lack of movement from his left arm maybe a bowling coach .......
