DEAD HORSES AT ZIMBABWE CRICKET

Opening post

As they say, the tribal wisdom of the Dakota Indians, passed on from generation to generation, says that when you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount. In Zimbabwe cricket however, a whole range of far more advanced strategies are often employed. These include:

• Buying a stronger whip.

• Changing riders.

• Threatening the horse with termination.

• Appointing a committee to study the horse.

• Visiting other sites to see how others ride dead horses.

• Lowering the standards so that dead horses can be included.

• Re-classifying the dead horse as “living, impaired”.

• Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse.

• Harnessing several dead horses together to increase the speed.

• Attempting to mount multiple dead horses in hopes that one of them will spring to life.

• Providing additional funding and/or training to increase the dead horse’s performance.

• Doing a productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse’s performance.

• Declaring that as the dead horse does not have to be fed, it’s less costly, carries lower overhead, and therefore contributes substantially more to the bottom line of the economy than some other horses.

• Re-writing the expected performance requirements for all horses.

• Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position.

Clearly, Dakota wisdom does seem to be common sense, but not for some, especially in Zimbabwe cricket Here are the top five dead horses Zimbabwe cricket have been riding. As a reader, you are free to add yours.

He feels inferior. And is very frustrated.

Hmm...finally realised that his agenda isn't really cricket, just some racial cleansing conviction. That is why he's never at the grounds, but conveniently working his computer to look up stats that could easily serve this agenda.

I guess that after dismounting the Dakotas get on a different horse. What if the colts are also looking moribund? Would they rather walk?

You digress. :) I do not dislike or hate people of any race, tribe, class or whatever. I only hate the narrative - "anything led or controlled by white people (or other races) works, anything by black people does not".

The ICC said Taibu is world class, wrote that and put a picture to prove that they didn't make a mistake and referring to him spciafically. Yet many refused and continue to refuse to accept it. They couldn't stomach it. Insisting that a 34 average batsman who will never be remembered as a keeper-batsman, must be called world class too. They debated Taibu needlessly. Just look at the profile of those raising the arguments. What does that tell you? Someone here also attacked Tsotsobe unnecessarily. Ask yourself - if you're belittling Tsotsobe, how many bowlers then in the history of the game are you unwisely writing off? A black man always has to prove and defend himself or his credentials.

In any case a white man in Africa is completely different from a white man in America, Europe, Australasia etc. In fact that extends beyond white people. An Indian, Pakistan, Chinese, Bangaldeshi, Cuban, Arab etc only needs to spend just one year in Africa at most, and already they develop a superiority complex towards an African, a complex they would not otherwise have developed if they went to USA or France for example, yet some come from a slum or an environment with no basic human rights or freedom of speech. So it's that narrative, and ultimately how it affects how people talk and think. If Mangongo is a dead horse, how is Whatmore not one? If Maruma is a dead horse how on earth is Moor not one. If I hadn't put the microscope on Williams so much lately, do you think the OP would have included his name?

Some of the things I read on this very forum are frightening. Over the years, the names and phrases used to describe Bvute, Mangongo, Chingoka, Makoni, Chawaguta, Utseya, Maruma, Matsi etc have been absolutely shocking. Someone here recently referred to Esther Lupepe as a 'greedy savage'. How gentlemanly! None of the wrong'un's comments were ever moderated but were quoted and commented on extensively. Nobody sees or saw anything wrong in them. He is not alone in making those comments. You guys never bother to moderate or counsel each other either.

What exacerbates it is some of the guys here making those comments are neither Zimbabwen(nor South African), some not even white - Indian, Bangladeshi etc. But speak with authority and certainty about subjects and opinions developed via mob psychology.

Plenty of the positions and character assasinations that are adopted, are based on rumours, speculation and peddled as fact for years&years. The glaring errors of Coltart, Taylor, Streak, AC etc are overlooked. Brent's record at Mountaineers is remembered. Mangongo's record is forgotten. Certain players have to earn their way into the team, others have it laid out for them on a silver platter. But few complain when they observe such injustices. They are defended.

The indefensible is/are defended. One coach has a bad record (Houghton, Butcher, Bundu, Whatmore etc) but none of the team perfomances are ascribed to the coach. Yet, a Black coach be it for u19s or the national team takes over and similarly fails, but everyone points every failure to that coach, suddenly it's not players responsible for defeats(like with the other coaches) but this time it's the coach.

Most if not all the tours that have taken place this year, were touted in the media before AC went back to ZC. People knew Zimbabwe would have a busy 2015 calendar before AC arrived. It was natural for Zimbabwe to run out of money and be unable to host tours months before CWC15, just as it is normal for them to have full calendars in the first 2-3 years after the CWC15, and struggle in 2017-18, but most fail to make that basic connection. Today everything is a miracle by AC. No one even bothers to work out in their minds just how much those sponsorships could possibly be worth in total compared to ZC's overall wage bill. If he was that good why is he working for unstable lowly ZC?

The notion is Mukondiwa etc are sitting on their backsides idling around. Yet AC was in charge of everything before the Utseya letter, but we didn't have any domestic fixtures. If he was arranging all those international tours, how could he fail to fit in the domestic calendar somewhere considering he was working on it several months ago? There is selective amnesia about some of the known bad decisions taken by AC. It's ok for him to say "I don't know what Sean Williams did to break team protocol, but Zimbabwe cannot afford to not select a player of his takent for whatever reason." Imagine Fleming or Kirsten saying that about Ryder or Gibbs!

Even the journalists are like-minded. In fact to call them journalists is an overstatement. They are glorified online bloggers who are allowed free license to say whatever they like only when reporting on "rotten Zimbabwe". Basic scrutiny of their writings tells you they would never be given the responsibilty of writing the kind of stuff they write if they were working for any paper in the jurisdiction of Zimbabwe or South Africa. No editor would allow that nonsense to be printed. Yet I constantly read how African journalists are ridiculed for their name spellings and rudimentary understanding of cricket, but not lauded for their journalistic integrity which Tristan & Liam have shown several times that they lack, but no one notices.

So when I present the opposite side to what you're used to or prefer to hear, don't mistake that for hatred or dislike. Never mistake that for hatred. Read and understand each point on its merits, and argue each point on its merits - factually and logically, never emotionally.
