Opening post

Zimbabwe v Afghanistan: 1st ODI

Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, 16 October 2015

Afghanistan did well against the development boys - now what about the "proper" team..?

Absolutely stoked about this series! Like many Bangladeshis, I've got a bit of Afghan ancestry (or at least Pashtun ancestry)...some of these Zadrans and Zais might be 6th cousins!

At any rate, Afghanistan's strength lies in their strength (physically speaking), they aren't like the rest of the Asian sides. They will be a tough team, but Zimbabwe are favorites here as they've beaten Ireland and the Irish are a notch better than the Afghans.

Strengths:

Bowling, particularly their pacers, but even their spinners are pretty decent.

Raw athleticism - something the other 4 Asian sides lack.

Attitude - Afghans are hyper aggressive and will make the Irish look amateur in terms of their sledging and behavior. Wouldn't be surprised if the ICC fines several of them by the end of the series. But it makes the game that much more interesting to watch. They really abused Bangladesh the past 1 year.

Weaknesses:

Batting - they just lack the technique and the overall batsmanship. look for them to try and conserve wickets for the first 35 overs and then explode in the final 10. Won't always be able to pull it off.

Fielding - these guys make a lot of amateur fielding errors and if the ZIM batters are paying attention they should get an extra 10-15 runs just from misfields and overthrows.

My prediction: ZIM to win the series 3-2.

On the downside, our record at QSC the past few years is poor, even by our usual standards...

Nothing on the Cricinfo live page yet, toss was due 10mins ago. Beginning to wonder if they've bothered to send anyone to cover it.

Seems like Chisoro in for Williams... Which doesn't make much sense. They are hardly like for like. Makes the batting look somewhat weaker, it must be said.

So our batting line up will probably go like this:

Chamu

Mutumbami

Ervine

Chigumbura

Raza

Mutombodzi

Chisoro

Jongwe

Wasakadza

Panyangara

Nyumbu

Doesn't exactly look strong...
That's a long tail
