Opening post

Zimbabwe v Afghanistan, 5th ODI

Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, 24 October 2015

So, here we are at 2-2 with a tie-break to play.

Lose a series to an Associate?!

Or is it...
Gutsy performance from Raza given he's carrying an injury. I don't know what condition he is going to be in if Zimbabwe need him with the bat. Hopefully the top order does its job so he doesn't have to.

We needed our future captain to make 86 the other day with a broken leg and wasn't enough. And we'll need more from him today :(

We've now run him into the ground - and he managed his best bowling figures in ODIs too.

Hope he's okay for Bangladesh.

Maybe a 3 pronged spin attack is the way to go. Panyangara + Chibhabha, with Cremer, WM and Chisoro. Nyumbu and Madziva as backup in the squad?

There's always Williams and Raza to provide additional overs too.

I'd have Jongwe on the plane ahead of Muzarabani though.

It looks a bit better now. And Jongwe gets his wicket. :W:

He hasn't been great with the new ball but he's been good in the middle overs and at the death. I would persist with him.
Pany back into the attack in for the last few overs. Six of his first delivery
Should have let Jongwe finish the innings

It's quite farcical isn't it. Is there any surer thing in life than Panyangara going for runs in the last few overs?

He's had a shocker of a series to be honest.

gee Panyangara gets hit over the fence a lot

Let's talk in February. I've already posted Zimbabwe's stats in Bangladesh. It's not like those before him did much better.

Anyway I won't let anyone make this about Mangongo. NEVER! He's not in Bulawayo coaching such mediocrity. If you want discuss them among yourselves. I'll discuss the only coaches (Whatmore&Bundu) who have been responsible for such poor batting, and the selector responsible for dropping the batsman who would have bullied Associate bowlers (Hami).

You're right. This is not in the slightest bit about Mangongo. In my opinion, the role of the coach is vastly overstated anyway. Any coach scores precisely 0 runs, and takes 0 wickets. Whatmore and Waller are equally not "responsible for such poor batting". Chibhabha, Mutumbami, Ervine, etc are responsible for the poor batting, as they didn't bat very well. That's the bottom line. The players available were not good enough to win a series at home to Afghanistan. That's pretty damning.
Wow.

Congratulations to Afghanistan.

My commiseration to Zimbabwe.

As a fan of a team that similarly puts up lack lustre performances I can only imagine that this must hurt truly deeply for true Zimbabwe cricket fans.

I do like to keep faith though that in the long run (and I'm not talking the next 2 years, but more like the next 15-30) things should get better for Zimbabwe (and for West Indies).

In the meantime I think this will only strengthen Afghanistan's push for full membership. If that happens soon, perhaps it might remove some of the sting insofar as Afghanistan could well be considered a full member in everything but name when it comes to the cricket that they play.

So, where do we go from here folks? I could not follow the game yesterday, but thank goodness I could not. What a farce. top score of 102 and the next best is 16!

Only major bright spots in the last few months of intense action have been the emergence of Wellington and Chisoro (we'll know their class as they play against tougher opposition) and the never-say-die attitude of Raza. Ervine and Williams have been good in patches, Chibhabha's form has started to desert him, Mutumbami has been brave with the bat but ugly with keeping at times. Chigumbura has tranformed himself to god knows what. All this at the very least means Hamilton must be back in the squad for the BD tour. May be add Regis at 4 or 5 too at the expense of Mutombodzi. But not much beyond that. BD are in for a feast next month.

Agree with your approach of putting the XI in the order of their priority in going onto the team sheets. First 4 are spot on, as well as no.6 onwards. Batting order can be taken care of later.

For LOIs in BD, we would have to play more than just one specialist spinner though. So, the perennially useless Vusi gives way to another one from Wellington / Chisoro / Cremer. Interesting that you have dropped Chigumbura altogether, may be these nothing knocks of 13 (45) kind have taken their toll?

But I thought Chigumbura was here to stay as captain ?? :D

Mutombodzi has shown he isn't ready for international cricket just yet maybe put him back to domestic cricket but then we must bring back failed guys like Vusi, Malcolm or Regis ? Maybe it's time for Vusi to be given a go in the middle but he really hasn't shown any form in limited overs cricket for a while .....

Hami is a good chance to return now as well, but I guess it depends if the selectors and Whatmore are sacrificing results now for giving experience to the likes of Chari, Jongwe, Mutombodzi etc

😂 Crimson Chigumbura is the captain he will always be there. I didn;t leave him out or forget him.

I see my comments didn't go in with that post. But I mentioned selectors might be stubborn and force Chamu to continue opening or drop him.

Raza, Williams & Vusi will have no choice but to contribute towards 24 overs using their spin, while Hami, Chamu&Elton help them complete that.

Wellington has his 10 overs, and the two seamers sharing at least 16 overs. Any shortfall those 5 part-timers will help them cover it.

With everyone fit this is the XI.

Raza, Williams, Regis, Hami, Vusi, Chibhabha, CHIGUMBURA(C), Mutumbami(wk), Wellington, Chatara, Panyangara (In many conditions Zimbabwe doesn't need a fronline spinner considering the part-timers it has, so Jongwe can play)

Chamu is not an opener, and Elton a lower middle order batsman, so that's where they should bat.

Williams if he goes, Craig will slot in his spot. Craig has failed several times in the middle order, the latest being in Bangladesh - where Zimbabwe are going next month. I'll be surprised if he scores more than 30 runs in those 3 ODIs. Against decent attacks he simply cannot cope in the top order either. In a nutshell he's simply not good enough in my view, and will be exposed badly even in the Pro50&Logan Cup like several times before.

Your sarcastic remarks, and order of importance jibes hold no water. Willaims has been the most ineffective ZImbabwe batsman when it's mattered. Raza like I said scored just a few more runs than Elton aformer tailender, who has been off form - which says a lot. And Craig was brutally exposed like I said he would.

I will not defend Chamu&Mutumbami. They do not belong in the top 5 in any way shape or form, neither are they among the 5 best batsmen in Zimbabwe for any format.

I think after the new Zealand/Pakistan/Ireland matches it would have been good to have more bowler rotation in the afghan series. what must madziva do to break into the side he picked up 4/49 against India in july and has hardly had a chance to stake a claim since. he is reasonably (Zimbabwe standards) quick and quite skiddy

I cant help but feel he might have made the difference

BV calls for Zimbabwe to drop Ervine who has the highest average of any player in Zimbabwe's history of ODI's 😂 😂 😂 😂

Before you go on a tirade about him scoring runs against weak bowling lineups I'll remind you that you never responded to the career stats I posted for Henry and McClenaghan ?? I wonder why 😂

And the other fact is all the other batsman played against the same opposition but Ervine did better than all of them ......
