Why Hamilton Masakadza was dropped

Opening post

I firmly believe that Hamilton Masakadza has been dropped because, with Bangladesh Tests coming up next month, and him as the overwhelming favourite to be named captain something had to be done to try and justify why he will be sidelined.

Dropping him from ODIs7T20s puts him out of sight, and raises concerns about his longevity and age which will overwhelm the arguments about his last tour to New Zealand.

The questions that I'm asking myself right now are was this a coup by Elton and the Admins? Barring the 50 two games ago, he's been rather poor with the bat.

Or is it just the selectors trying to give the job to Raza who has been off colour since his century, and pretty useless with the ball?

Or perhaps they want to give it to Williams whose poor form lately with the bat&ball is well documented by myself. It's only in this series against Pakistan that he has done well, as have Jongwe&Panyangara both being strangely economical despite opening and ending the innings.

I'm not sure between Elton, Raza & Williams. Surely the amount of protection Williams has received and continues to receive must mean someone is doing their best to ensure that he's in front of everyone's eyes so the decision doesn't come as a shock.

Afterall Regis the wiset choice as a youngster, leading batsman and no.1 keeper for the side has had questions due to his unsuitability to ODIs7T20s. Elton Chigumbura is already LOIs captain. No way they'd selected Raza ahead of Williams, so it's probably all being done for Williams. Only his continued poor spell with the bat will make them give Raza the nod, but against Ireland & Afghanistan, it's impossible for him no to find form. They knew Hami would smash these two teams.

Whatever the case might be, what I am certain of is that Hamilton Masakadza has been dropped for political reasons. His sudden exclusion made absolutely no sense, despite some folk here who had their very perculiar and rather sad explanations.

Hamilton has always got a bit of a raw deal. I agree that there might be more to the story.

There has to be a behind the doors explanation. It's completely ludicrous. Jimmy might have an answer?

It does seem unusual.

Im pretty certain it wasnt a ploy by Elton to keep the captaincy even though Raza/Willo could steal it.

Wasnt someone remarking his body language was poor?

He could have personal reasons or mental health reasons.

Hes one of our top 5 bats thats for sure, so doubt it will be long on the sidelines.

Elton was very short in the press conference just saying that Hami was dropped and not in the squad .....

Maybe there something else ??

25 avg in his last 10 innings playing mostly second string bowling attacks. I think he's played 5 match winning knocks out of 200ish innings in his career. Thats maybe ok for a 22 year old, but for a guy in his prime, thats not good. I would take someone more inconsistent but who has a higher ceiling like C Ervine, Williams, Raza, etc.

Hami wasn't looking that bad. He scored 25 in one of the games. He only had 3 games where he didn't score runs. He looked good in the previous series. It's a new series and he could have dominated the mediocre Irish attack. I wouldn't mind dropping Hami if we have a better player than him in the reserves. But, they are going with Chari? He scored 39 runs in like 60 balls. Hami can give you 60 runs in 39 balls.

There is something else - the absence of Ziehl, Bundu & Whatmore from a press conference after arguably the team's best player has been dropped.

Ironic considering all three have had a lot to say and featured prominently in the media lately.

Instead we have an assistant coach, bowling coach and former seamer when we don't expect Muzarabani to play ahead of Panyangara, which would make his presence ahead of them in the press conference worthwhile.

I can never understand this forum seriously. Hamilton Masakadza has just been dropped, and yet no one to my knowledge has mentioned:

1. Convenor of Selectors Kenyon Ziehl

2. Head Coach Dav Whatmore

3. Batting Coach Bundu Waller

You continue to question how Chari & Waller were retained, yet do not question who made the recomendations that they be selected in the first place(batting coach approved by head coach in consultation with convenor).

You questioned Mutumbami's deployment to open, yet again no questions were raised about those making the decision (batting coach & head coach)

I shudder to think what was said about Mangongo when Taylor was dropped, or Makoni when Kamungozi was selected for the world cup ahead of some of the other young spinner! Yet these figures are immune to talking points relevant to them. Is this some kind of a joke?

Looking at the Afghanistan scorecard one can only laugh. The two best batsmen of the squad Kasuza&Chakabva opened the batting. If Waller, Williams & Ervine were there alongside those two, I can assure you that neither would've opened the batting and no one here would have bat an eyelid.

Again I laugh to myself when I continue to read comments like Chari is in no way good enough to be part of the XI or squad ahead of Hami - which we all agree - yet again the XI's most people if not everyone is posting has Craig, Williams and Raza all batting below him.

Burl has arguably the best u19 batting record for Zimbabwe. On average played he's double the number of u19s compared to any other player in Zimbabwe's u19 history, and by&large been an opener. He opened or batted in the top order in FC cricket, yet in the Afghanistan fixture he was rightly picked lower in the order because there's experienced or older guys above. Some of whom he's probably a superior batsman in comparison to.

How then do you question Chari yet place him that high while there's better batsmen? How does one's mind reconcile that contradiction? It's clear that in domestic cricket he had been batting lower because he had trouble batting higher up the order.

Just because Mutumbami was picked to open as an accident, and scored some runs, some continue to stick him up there? If Hami was there you had him opening, now that he's dropped it's Chari?

I said the entire squad shoul dbe overhauled, which would inevitably have had guys like Kasuza & Chari selected ahead of Hami, but also Chigumbura, Willaims etc. This individual dropping of Hami on the other hand is unfair, and the right people need to questioned as far as that decision is concerned. Why is that not happening?

Why are you so obsessed with who is opening? You don't just rank your batsmen 1-11 and play them in that order. Do know anything about cricket at all?

I recall he bowled outstandingly well in the Test series in West Indies (except for the Barbados match).

😂 now you're being sarcastic. Bowled well in West Indies? 😂

Given a choice I don't think even Cremer would pick himself in Tests.

Why don't you think he bowled well in that series?

I think you've had enough fun now. Enjoy the rugby. 😂

Both innings came when Zimbabwe were in a position to exert pressure, but couldn't, largely due to one bowler consistently leaking runs. Samuels had targeted Graeme Cremer, not allowing him to settle as he took 32 off 26 deliveries from the legspinner. Brendan Taylor persisted with Cremer, over his other specialist spinner Ray Price, and Sammy took further toll. Forty-seven of Sammy's runs came off the 28 balls he faced from Cremer. In contrast, Price bowled just 27 deliveries to Sammy and Samuels combined, and conceded only seven.

All Sammy and Samuels wanted to do was to hit boundaries, which is what Zimbabwe allowed them, with Cremer serving up long hops and overpitched deliveries. All the four sixes Sammy hit came against Cremer, as did most of his fours. When Cremer bowled full, Sammy powered him straight down the ground. When he dropped it short often, he was pulled over midwicket. Samuels cut and pulled Cremer despite the bounce in the pitch, and also stepped out to drive him against the turn through midwicket. By the time the restrictive Price was given more bowling, the damage had already been done.

Samuels hit Cremer out of the attack.

West Indies slipped from 144 for 5 at lunch to 151 for 6 soon after, as Chanderpaul under-edged an attempted pull off Jarvis to the wicketkeeper. Two overs later, Cremer was brought back, probably to lure Sammy to his fall. Only, Sammy wasn't to be lured today.

one or two slogging innings cant make sammy a classy test batsman..looking forward to see him playing against better attacks on the contrary he scored most of his runs against poor graeme cremer...hilarious

I already said except for the Barbados match. In your haste to reply you aren't reading other people's posts.

I read what you said perfectly well, hence my laugh. 😂

What's worse is you want to use a Test match in which Utseya thoroughly outbowled Cremer, yet if Usteya wasn't banned you would have still picked Cremer ahead of him. 😂

The sooner this forum accepts that Cremer is overrated and a liabiliy for Zimbabwe - particularly in Tests&ODIs, the sooner ZImbabwe can work on identifying solutions. Nyumbu already is building better stats than Cremer in ODIs. Wellington Masakadza has started. Chisoro&Mufudza are demanding a run too.

If Cremer goes to Bangladesh I will laugh bit time, and he will prove me right. Going to Bangladesh will mean the end of his career in my view.

Anyway this was his last match so Bangladesh will be very much looking forward to playing against him. Not to mention the fact that his ODI record against them is already very poor. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/623577.html

Okay, well let's look at that match then. You say Utseya out bowled Cremer, I think they complimented each other.

Do you agree that the pitch there, historically, is not conducive to spin and therefore we should be praising both players?

Not conducive to spin? http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... ype=ground

Utseya did just fine as lead spinner without anyone to complement him the last time Pakistan went to Zimbabwe for a 2 match Test series and almost lost 2-0.

The question about Cremer has never been about talent. His talent is undeniable (same with Coventry to some degree). It has always been about thriving alone as lead spinner. Having a presence. Pual Strang could do it, same with Usteya&Price. Cremer simply couldn't get it right once Price, then Utseya were not there. He's no better than Brian Murphy, only les smarter than Murphy. Adam Huckle was horrible but streets ahead of Cremer.

I know the excuse made for him is that legspin is a difficult art, but the reality is he has shown little signs of improving.

Hamilton Masakadza got dropped...for "poor form". Let that sink in!

I was mistaken, my apologies.

Adam Huckle horrible? He did pretty well against NZ.
