I did some stats for Vusi a little while ago, he averages 50 at number four in First Class, well above his average overall.
His stats in List A at 4 are a little less impressive. I forget off hand but was about 0.09 less than his overall average.
From what he has been saying recently, he would prefer to bat in the middle and not open.
I suspect that has always been the case though, that he wanted to be in the middle order and not open but that is pure speculation on my part and not something he has ever said explicitly.

I think for a batsman of Vusi's quality before dropping they really should have tried him in the middle, not to just say open or bust. Cos he will just score loads of runs ahead of any pretenders who want to make the cut. Then if selection is truly by merit he will be back in the team again.

I think the spinner is the major worry, as demonstrated by thoughts of Lamb at 8.

I actually agree that Vusi is worth a shot in the middle order. I question his ability to rotate the strike for limited overs cricket but am happy to be proven wrong.
