ZCF Hall of Famer

Opening post

isnt sicknote on the way back? or is he still in hiding?

honest answer is wait till the domestic season, should throw up a few surprises and be a good determinant of who should be there.

although that doesnt help in time for pakistan.
Pple are patient with Chiggs,in the last 10 ODIs i think he's averaging 10 runs and 1 wicket. He derseves a place on the bench...wld love 2 see Raza open with Vusi in the warm-up matches. And i don't know much abt Waller,bt he's perfomance was really impressive in the lower-middler order

I think guys are a bit careless , selectors should show some middle order guys the bench , as they did to Hamilton . If Hamilton lost his form , then Elton has lost his too .

If I werea selector I would give a nudge or warming to Elton to pull up his socks against Pakistan , thereafter no negotiations
mutizwa had a crack must go now , waller showed lots more promise , ervine has proven himself in the past and is way ahead of mutizwa , chakabva , lamb , matsi ect williams would be perfect but we dont have him atm so no point winging ervine needs to knuckle down and do whatever he can to get his form back . class is permanent form is on and off

I hate it when people just churn out stats from their heads...for the record, Chigs over the last 11ODIs: Batting Ave 18 and 4 wickets. For the just ended series: Batting Ave 16.5 and 4 wickets. I think his bowling is showing signs of improvement, his batting has really disappeared.

And just to contextualise based on the Bangla series: Batting wise, tops was Vusi 48.4, Taibu 39.5, Hami 36.2, Waller 31.5, Taylor 24.6, Mutizwa 21.66, Chigs 16.5, Ervine 13, then the bowlers

As for the bowling Vitori 11 at 8.63, Pro 6 at 39.66, Price 5 at 33.6, Chigs 4 at 37.25, Mpofu 4 at 51.57, Jarvis 3 at 32.0, Meth 2 at 28 and Hami 1 at 30

So Chigs was not the best performer in any department, nor was he the worst. This doesnt indemnify him from being dropped, but I thought we should debate based on facts not what someone just wakes up feeling like churning out.

Yes the man is upon lean times but lets not just chuck dodgy stats so we can influence the forum, argue fairly please!

Again, I cant resist lets be factual in our assesment, not liking a player shouldn't blind us (if anything it really makes you look a bit dodgy). The facts:

Based on the past Pro40 competition, Ervine made 118 from 6 innings at 29.5 a high of 42*, NO 50s, Mutizwa made 221 from 6 innings at 36.83 a high of 62, 2 50s, marginal but I'd say Mutizwa based on ave is marginally better.

ODI career wise Ervine has an ave of 32.27 a high of 85, 4 50s, from 23 matches. Mutizwa is 32.8 a high of 79 and 3 50s, from 14 matches, again very marginal but I'd say Mutizwa based on ave is marginally better.

For the Bangla series: Mutizwa has had 4 cracks compared to Ervine's 3, Mutizwa made 27, 3, 9, and 27* giving an average of 21.6, Ervine made 18, 8*,0 average 13. Marginal but Mutizwa comes out tops.

Now for you to categorically say " ervine has proven himself in the past and is way ahead of mutizwa" is really streatching the truth (and I am being kind). I for one value Ervine more (he's a leftty, and does look imposing when on form), but I would never (with clean conscience) say " ervine has proven himself in the past and is way ahead of mutizwa", on the contrary he is marginally behind Mutizwa!

Guys lets be factual in our debates!

ervine has he has made a 50 against new zealand sri lanka mutizwa made 2 out of his 3 50s against a depleted kenyan side .ervine has more ability and also being a left hander gets the nod . mutizwa might have made more runs and a better avg by only 8 more than ervine this series but i have much more faith when watching ervine than mutizwa flower ur point is decent but mutizwa hasnt done anyhting against a quality nation unlike ervine.

My contenders for 5,6 and 7 are: Ewing, Lamb, Chigumbura, Waller, Ervine, Mutizwa and Coventry in no particular order in one dayers. If Ewing is available I'd give him a go in the warm up against Pak and see what he has to offer...and it just struck me that hhm is no longer around. Where is he?

Matsi is far from useless. He is a Zim legend and I would have him there as he can help bring the younger generation on and would do a good job for us. His presence in, and around, the national set up can only be good.

My Matsi lies over the ocean

My Matsi lies over the sea

My Matsi lies over the ocean

so bring back my Matsi to me to me

Bring back

Bring back

Bring back my Matsi to me to me.

I know this may never happen, but a middle order with Taibu at 4, Ballance at 5, Sean Ervine at 6 and Chigumbura at 7 looks a lot better than Taibu, Craig, Elton and Utseya. I wish everyone was available.

gargamel wrote:Oh no you did not say have Coventry bat at 7.

The problem with our cricket in the past was having top order guys once they dipped in form shunted down the order. Their whole lives they batted between 1 and 4 then you shunt them down to 5 6 7 . Classic examples are :

1.Trevor Gripper from 1 to 5 or 6

2.Gavin Rennie from 1 to 6 or 7

3.Dirk Viljoen from 1 to 6 or 7

I say leave them where they have learned to play and don't jig and play around with the order of things.

And once again i believe there are more options other than the frail and feeble Sean Williams at 5 or 6 , why not try Regi or Chamu or dare i say it in one dayers have Tino there

It's not that uncommon in world cricket. Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Simon Katich, Marcus North... top order batsmen that have all played in the middle order for Australia. They bat where the team needs them to bat.

All this t20 Coventry talk which I agree with begs a question.

What happens if zim go on a 1 test 5 odi 2 x t20 tour overseas

If cov is pegged as a t20 mainstay, would he go on tour solely for the t20s or will they just leave a odi player there to fill the role.
ZCF Hall of Famer
As in would they fly him over at that cost?

Should they ?

ZC have spent very lavishly lately, its time for them to Jew up a bit, but a move like this cuts into perceived optimal team strategy

We aren't big enough to have 3 specialist teams the core squad should be complemented by people more suited to the format.

The middle order is a problem, at this point it's the only fundamental weakness in the team. We can't be moving from 150-4 to 165-8 every single match.

The middle order woes will be solved once Ervine and Chigumbura return to form. The cupboard is bare when it comes to alternatives so there isn't really much we can do, unless Sean Ervine returns.
My All-time Zimbabwe XI

'so shld we stick with them when they out of form

i think if the domestic season starts , then the lack of middle order options will be a motivation to the guys inn the franchises to work hard and possibly get a try out .
