So two questions - who is currently considered Zim's best ever ODI batsman? And is Craig Ervine on track to become better than that person?

Maruma was set up to fail (opening in Tests, batting at three in the West Indies). But so was Rob Quiney, and plenty of others throughout history. It doesn't mean they are unfulfilled talents though. Both did well to make international selection and earning a Test cap is a special achievement they can be proud of, but their weaknesses were predictably and horribly exposed at the highest level.

Interestingly enough, Craig Ervine has the second highest overseas ODI average (40.37) of all-time for Zimbabwe. Only Sikandar Raza is higher (44.00). Sean Williams (bavuma and rabada's pick for captain) comes in at fourth with an average of 34.71.

Bavuma and Rabada are spot on that Craig Ervine is the best ODI batsman of Zimbabwe. He will transform his ODI form into tests also. Leading Zimbabwe in an ODI victory against New Zealand by scoring 130* & chasing 300 odd takes a lot of getting.
