HARARE - Harare Metropolitan Cricket’s board has agreed to meet the Zimbabwe Cricket emissaries to discuss issues bedevilling club cricket at Harare Sports Club today.
The board led by chairperson Cyprian Mandenge snubbed the initial stakeholders meeting with the ZC Cricket Committee a fortnight ago. The meeting was meant to set the ball rolling towards addressing the plight of club cricket.
Delegates went ahead with the meeting with Alistair Campbell, the committee’s chairperson, assuming the role of chair in the absence of Mandenge while the provincial board held a separate meeting with member clubs at Harare Sports Club.
Mandenge, who was out on a rugby attachment in South Africa, had reservations in the manner in which the meeting was haphazardly convened, saying the committee should have alerted his board in advance.
“It was appalling as to why the cricket committee would call for a meeting with the clubs without talking to the board but I have since spoken to (national team assistant coach) Steve Mangongo upon my return and we are glad that we are going to meet with them and hear what they have to offer.
“We are not against any measures that would help improve our cricket.”[/quote

The meeting was cancelled it scheduled for tomorrow . It will be quite interesting on how it will work out.

The meeting today was an eye opener and will result in the possible death of black run cricket clubs . ZC cricket committee has the idea ti have the Harare metro pol teams to be reduced to 8 self sustaining clubs who have club grounds . This did not go down with the fledgling black clubs who would not qualify as they do not have home grounds and have no sponsosr to mainatin the grounds. Its official ZC is broke they will not support any clubs or local league but they have plans to have a national league

8 clubs isn't enough for a national league. Gweru and Kwekwe both need one. Bulawayo needs at least those two. Two in Manicaland. Mashonaland needs a non-Harare team. If clubs are going to be a realistic tier below franchise level and a national league is the way to go, then we need at least 2 clubs per franchise. 10-12 probably over two divisions.

I guess it comes down to the basic issue of if ZC should be funding club cricket. If ZC funds club cricket, they should get to call the shots, for better or worse. It is their money. If club cricket wants to be independent it needs to be self funding. Pretty simple really.

The message from ZC Cricket Com was very clear that they are broke and its futile to ask where the old funding from the past had been placed. The concept of clubs being self sufficient is the right take the only hinderence at the moment is that the majority of the good black sides have young lads who do not work in addition to the fact that they do not have access to possible sponsors due to a lack of a clear admin structure that can be trusted.

Where does all the funding ZC receives go? Is it really just not enough money to realistically run cricket in the country, or is it being wasted or embezzled?

A vast amount goes on airfares. I've done some numbers on plane tickets and I think it takes a big chunk out of the budget. One saving we could make is to reduce the number of officials/back room staff that go on tour.
