Rhodesia early 1900s. Having lost his fortune by betting heavily on single-wicket matches in Ulster, Captain Ervine finds himself in a remote post outside Mutare. When the local villagers, suffering from drought, cannot pay their taxes on time, he thinks up a devilish plan to make money: He challenges the village to a cricket match. Should the village win, he will pay their taxes, should they loose they will have to pay double "chibharo". In his desperation the local chief's son, Hami, takes up the challege and cobbles together a team. Episode 2 sees the arrival of a travelling Ndebele who has gotten to grips with the alien sport in his hometown of Buluwayo and agrees to teach the villagers the basics. The village outcast is found spying on the locals' preparation but Hami saves his life and the reformed mole becomes a member of the team despite his innocuous bowling. Meanwhile Capt. Ervine has enlisted the Salisbury professional AC to ensure his victory. Episode 3 and 4 feature the Great Match. After the Kid has destroyed the Colonials' top order, Capt. Ervine looks set for a match-winnig triple hundred when Hami hands the ball to the outcast who accidently gets one to turn extravagantly and bowls the Capt. More drama ensues when a well-set Hami is run-out by the cynical pro AC under controversial circumstances with only the Kid and the Ndebele left to bat ...

He forges a strong alliance with Duncan Fletcher, the countries' captain, and inspires the team to a series of wins that takes them to the World Cup final where they face the mighty West Indies.
