ZCF Hall of Famer

Opening post

Don't you have to have a run on the board before you can declare? You can't actually forfeit an innings. I remember reading that somewhere...

But I like your style of wishful thinking. :)

I'm pretty sure there was a declaration at 0/0 by a county team (the captain was an intl player, famous too, can't remember who though) who really wanted to bowl first about 30 years ago. Not 100% sure though. Maybe they had to face 1 ball and then declare?
Legend
The match was Middlesex v Surrey at Lords in 1977.

Middlesex, under captain Mike Brearley, had to win to keep in the hunt for the championship. With more than a day, of the 3 played at that time, lost to rain Brearley was told by his bowlers that they could bowl Surrey out twice.

Surrey were batting first and dismissed for 49. Brearley intended to forfeit his 1st innings but under the rules this could only be done in a 2nd innings, so he sent keeper Ian Gould and John Emburey out to open and declared after 1 ball.

Surrey were then bowled out again for 89 and Middlesex scored 142-1 to win the match.

...and that's exactly the one I had in mind, as well. Thank-you!

That's the one, I think it was posted on Cricinfo a few years ago :)

It's good to have a county guru around here :) Thanks Train Driver

If you look up Mike Brearley on cricinfo you will find a link to an article entitled 'Brearley's brilliant declaration' from 2 june 2007.

This article gives a description of that Middlesex v Surrey game.

Any news of todays play in Windhoek ?, or indeed of the tour squad for Pakistan ?

No, and no. As soon as any news pop up, I'll post it...

Here is the tour squad:

Zimbabwe squad: Prosper Utseya (captain), Gary Brent, Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Elton Chigumbura, Keith Dabengwa, Timycen Maruma, Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Christopher Mpofu, Tawanda Mupariwa, Raymond Price, Vusimuzi Sibanda, Tatenda Taibu, Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams.

No Duffin, which is interesting to note considering he isn't in Namibia. A bit disappointing too. Maruma is the only real "surprise".

The officials are tag teaming on the tour, for some unknown reason. Chingoka is only going for a few days (until the 17th or 18th), then Tavengwa Mukuhlani (vice president) will take his place... then he will leave, and Cyprian Mandenge will go to Pakistan and leave with the team. Figure that one out, I sure as hell can't.

To make sure any quota rules are enforced, I'd guess.

Where'd you find that list? My usual haunts don't have it up yet...

Thanks, I've just this minute found it on cricket365.com.

My original 'guess' tour party is the same except that I had Tino Mawoyo in. I had assumed a squad of 16 but perhaps with only one 1st class fixture 15 is enough.

The failure to select Terry Duffin for either squad does seem a little strange, but then since when has the course of Zim cricket run straight and true :?:

brmtaylor.com admin wrote:Good. IMO Namibia are far better than Gauteng etc, so Zimbabwe Provinces must be improving. I think a Zimbabwe Provinces squad should have a few matches against the full Kenyan side.

I agree, Zim Provinces should play a couple more games, they will improve a lot with this exposure. A game against Kenya is very much likely, i would also reccomend teams like Uganda.

Stumps on day two: Zimbabwe Provinces 339/6d, Namibia 107 & 218/3. Looks like Namibia have finally remembered how to play...

Even though it's looking dire, the points situation is not: Points Zimbabwe Provinces 13.78*, Namibia 4.14*

Friday Kasteni takes on the Namibian bowling attack

A win by 8 wickets 😂

It brings us up to third on the table: http://content-www.cricinfo.com/southaf ... ointstable

What a close game, I'm not sure how many overs were to spare but it was probably cutting it fine. A cameo by Graeme Cremer, 35 off 26 (what a transformation from bowler to allrounder, surely his Logan Cup century was no fluke) to seal the win - 2nd innings run rate of 6.00.

Would have been a good days play to be at.

Zimbabwe Squad:

Blessing Mahwire (captain), Regis Chakabva (wicket-keeper), Graeme Cremer, Tafadzwa Kamungozi, Friday Kasteni, Admire Manyumwa, Tinotenda Mawoyo, Keegan Meth, Bonaparte Mujuru, Taurai Muzarabani, Stephen Nyamuzinga, Edward Rainsford and Prosper Tsvanhu.

Obviously, none of these players will be in the squad for the trip to Pakistan - but you should be able to work out the tour squad by process of elimination, if you're keen. :) Note the return of one Ed Rainsford...

It is good to see Keegan Meth back in the mix. I hadn't heard anything of him recently and was concerned that he had moved on elsewhere. I think he has a bright future in the international game if he decides to stick with Zimbabwe.
My All-time Zimbabwe XI
Neil Johnson, Brendan Taylor, Murray Goodwin, Andy Flower (w), David Houghton, Sean Williams, Heath Streak (c), Andy Blignaut, Paul Strang, Eddo Brandes, Blessing Muzarabani

A shame that Cremer isn't in the Pakistan tour party, but not unexpected. Other than that, no real surprises. At least Brendan Taylor or Gary Brent aren't in the ZP squad, then we would have cause for concern.

My first eleven for this game:

1. Tino Mawoyo

2. Bonaparte Mujuru

3. Friday Kasteni

4. Regis Chakabva (wk)

5. Admire Manyumwa

6. Keegan Meth

7. Stephan Nyamuzinga

8. Graeme Cremer

9. Blessing Mahwire (c)

10. Prosper Tsvanhu

11. Edward Rainsford

12th man: Taurai Muzarabani

It is important to get match fitness into Rainsford, having been out of it for so long. The batting is a bit weak, although everyone can contribute. Obviously Mawoyo, Chakabva and Meth have roles to play (each of them need to get 50+, and ideally one of them will go on to score 100 if we are to put in a good show against the Namibian national team). The bowling isn't bad. Cremer, Mahwire and Rainsford are all good enough to break into the national team. Mahwire and Rainsford to take the new ball, Tsvanhu (which to be truthful I don't know too much about, other than he is a reasonably decent medium pacer) to be first change and Cremer for spin. Manyumwa, Nyamuzinga and Meth can all have a spell here and there if required.

I think this game is being played in Windhoek (please correct me if I'm wrong) so with a bit of luck we will see ball-by-ball on Cricinfo and some news throughout the game from Namibian media.
