Muzhange happy with contract

Mid-West Rhinos right arm fast bowler Richard Muzhange is pleased with the mutual decision he reached with his franchise to downgrade him from a monthly fixed paying contract to earn-as-you-play contract ahead of the Zimbabwe domestic cricket season that starts tomorrow.

Muzhange had previously enjoyed the benefits of a senior contract with the franchise in the past seasons, earning a steady income along the way.

But he has opted for a different scheme so that he could also explore other financial adventures while also playing the game. The cricket season was delayed owing to financial challenges affecting the mother body and the uncertainty drove many players such as Muzhange to find alternative means of earning a living.

“It was a decision I had to make because things were a bit unpredictable and I had other things that I am doing on the side so I cannot just get up and leave them, it was mutual decision between us with the Rhinos,”

Muzhange has interest in a company that manufactures wire nails and works for former Zimbabwe Cricket convener of selectors and chairman of the cricket committee, Alistair Campbell, who now has an ITC retail business which specialises in laptops and tablets.

“I have a good arrangement with the Rhinos and I will be available for each game. It has been a while since everyone has played cricket so you actually don’t know how people have been performing and it is only up to the first game for me to gauge how strong each squad is,” he said.

Muzhange is also joined by former national team player Edward Rainsford on the list of players on earn-as-you-play contract. The Rhinos will travel from Kwekwe to open their season with a Pro50 match against Mashonaland Eagles at Harare Sports Club. Seven out of the contracted squad of 18 are on monthly contracts while the franchise will be cushioned financially with three players Vusi Sibanda,

Brendan Taylor and Malcolm Waller on ZC central contracts and the remaining eight on earn-as-you-play schemes.

Quite a different squad from 2010 ay chaps, the likes of Compton, Nicholson, Benade, Mire, Cremer, butterworth etc...

The next batter coming thru is Ryan Burl. I've watched this guy a few times, he is absolutely outstanding, by any country's standards. Pure unadulterated talent and a phenomenal cricketing brain, and can absolutely smoke a cricket ball, good at all formats. Will he elect to play his cricket here though? That will depend on a change for the good, which I'm not seeing, really hope I'm wrong.

Joylord Gumbie is another real talent and is about to play Franchise. Plays way too loose but very good nonetheless. Despite their ages I think you will find Welch and Byrom will close the gap as well, depending on what exposure they get. If they languish at schoolboy level they will waste their talent. Curtis (currently natal u16 captain) is right up there as well, but not sure of his plans. also Curran but I'm sure he's gone for good.

I know a few schoolboys are looking at going overseas to finish their schooling because the standard of schoolboy cricket is so poor and there are so few games. This is what I find so annoying, there are some desperately keen cricketers here but the standard is not good enough, at any level. You can't play substandard cricket your whole life and then one day expect to be really good, it just ain't going to happen. You have to play lots of competitive cricket. In order to qualify for SA u19 apparently u have to prove you have played 70 games in a year!! Our u19's play around 12 and the standard is poor. Richard Lock is leaving in January, he's a really good player. I believe Nick Welch has had several offers but his Dad wants him to stay here if he gets higher exposure, which he seems to be getting. Eddie Byrom has pending offers, Sean Snyder has had offers, and there's every chance (100% chance!!) an SA school will approach Matigimu whilst he's on tour now. These top SA schools head hunt black players because they get Gov allowances, it doesn't matter if they come from Zim, that's why we lose all our top black schoolboy rugby players after u14 Craven Week. Just saw on Cricinfo that Nick Welch played a match saving 51 off 53 in the second innings of a declaration game against Boland this afternoon.

Mid-West Rhinos are facing rather uncertain times with their good quality but rather thin squad.

Lack of depth in batting has been their main weakness in the last season or two, despite having three national batsmen: the captain Brendan Taylor, Vusimuzi Sibanda and Malcolm Waller.

The probable loss of all three later in the season for the International Cricket World Twenty20 Cup must be causing a lot of concern, because there are as yet no other established batsmen of real experience and quality to stand in the gap. Peter Moor and Bothwell Chapungu will need to stand up and be counted, but Mark Vermeulen and Stephen Trenchard have both left. The wicketkeeper Nyasha Mayavo scored a century in the final Logan Cup match of last season, and it is hoped his batting talent will now flourish when it is needed.

Their strong bowling attack is also in danger of depletion. Graeme Cremer has not signed up to play at all yet, due to his dissatisfaction with the financial situation in Zimbabwe Cricket, while Edward Rainsford and Richard Muzhange may not be available fulltime as both have recently secured part-time jobs due to the prevailing uncertain circumstances.

Mike Chinouya may have a heavy load to carry, along with Neville Madziva. One gain for the franchise is the acquisition of all-rounder Mark Mbofana from Mashonaland Eagles.

Grant Flower will coach the team with the same passion and intensity he put into his own illustrious career. He has high hopes for two under-19 all-rounders: Carl Mumba and Mkhululi Nyathi, and expects both to be playing in the senior Mid-West Rhinos side sooner rather than later.
