HARARE - IN scenes reminiscent of last August’s victorious return to Test cricket following a six-year self-imposed exile, hundreds of hysterical Zimbabwean cricket fans filled Harare Sports Club to the rafters and urged on the team to a famous nine-wicket demolition of South Africa to win the Pran RFL tri-series.

As the players went on a lap of honour after the game, fans invaded the pitch and rushed to celebrate with the players, obligingly returning to the stands after security officers moved in to disperse the crowd.

There has been a lot of soul-searching in the Zimbabwean team after the disastrous tour of New Zealand at the beginning of the year, and that introspection has ushered new confidence in the side, which was abundantly noticeable throughout the series in the manner the players went about their business.

The two tournament wins over a South African side – though depleted but no less a bona Proteas side – make the series win much more special and gratifying.

Twenty20 cricket, admittedly, gives the smaller sides a chance of winning games, but it will be unfair to completely put Zimbabwe’s victory down to that.

Overall, Zimbabwe did the basics right and played some very good cricket in all departments throughout the tournament.

Encouragingly, the senior players came to the party throughout and showed youngsters the way.

Hamilton Masakadza was rock-solid and played with firm determination to win the man-of-the-series award with 216 runs which included a magnificent four half-centuries.

Talismanic captain Brendan Taylor was at his majestic best yesterday with a half-century of his own while Vusi Sibanda also showed his class on occasions.

Senior bowler Chris Mpofu continue to get better and better as a tidy and threatening frontline bowler, qualities which rubbed off on his young pace bowling partners, Kyle Jarvis and Richard Muzhange.

Zimbabwe can have a bullish view of the future after this impressive showing.

Mention on Twitter yesterday that the ground security was a private company (Fawcetts) & not ZRP. Someone who was at the ground might be able to confirm...

That explains it then. I am surprised they even allow large groups of people to gather in a place that is so close to the Presidential Lair.

ZRP was also thr but it seemed they had no clue about crowd control. It was a bit of fun though.

Naaah there are state agents at the ground all over the place and obviously in ZC as well. They insist on it. Rushing the ground is the least of their worries, you can even say stuff about the president in the stands and they wont really bother you (not advisable though), they know their stuff. Try do something really funny while you at the ground then you will know all about it.

A banner that says what? Its depends on the content of the banner
