Paul Strang steps down as Auckland Coach

Auckland will have a new cricket coach next summer, with Paul Strang stepping aside at the end of this season.

The former Zimbabwe legspinner has been in charge for the last four seasons, during which Auckland have twice contested the Champions League as New Zealand's T20 champions, and collected a national one-day title too, as well as being beaten limited-overs finalists three times in between.

He was offered the chance to roll his contract over for one more year. However Strang's decision is based around a belief it is time for a change and the desire to look at new opportunities.

"The team has moved forward quite a bit in four years and now is really a good opportunity to get a new voice and new way of doing things," he said yesterday.

His decision was no spur-of-the-moment call. Strang had been thinking of standing aside from early in the summer. He is keeping his options open for the future, and will look at roles both within and outside cricket.

Would be great if our nations greatest spinner would return to Zimbabwe and mentor our crop of young spinners.

I'm sure he would have plenty of experience to pass on to Cremer, Mushangwe, Mutombodzi and Zimwa.

😂 Forget it. He's already said in an interview that he's got a whole life with a young family in the comfort of developed conditions, and they wouldn't want to downgrade form that. Zim is too unstable and unpredictable for him to expose them to it is what he said! He should keep it that way(we've already got Heath & Grant doing enough damage by causing divisions in camp)!

Then again, I wouldn't discount him getting a job in an SA/IPL franchise(maybe met a few people during the CLT20), or even County Cricket as Jemisi assumes.

Don't want him at the Tuskers, or Zim coaching setup. The spinners' coaching role should go to Price, who should be really focusing on cementing his future, unless of course he wants to be repairing fridges!

Aydee's already mentioned Cremer, Mushangwe, Mutombodzi and Zimwa. You can add Utseya, Mugava, Mboyi, Maruma, Kamungozi, Ewing, Matsi, Waller, Williams etc. Price can occasionally hold clinics, and ZC can pay for Paul to come down as a consultant. Or one of my favourites, Saqlain who can pretty much come in as a a player/coach as well. Definitely worth paying over the top for these two, rather than T20/Franchise baggage, so they can help our front-line and occasional spinners in camps twice a year.

Spinners have little future in the coaching world so Price should get a move on. It's better when you're a seamer, batsmen, or seamer-allrounder(all the more reason why I say spinner-allrounders don't exist in Test cricket) ;) .

Only hhm would actively campaign against getting Paul Strang involved in Zimbabwe cricket. He is happy to bring in a Pakistani but not a Zimbabwean with a track record of coaching success? Why wouldn't you want him?

While I'd never undermine Pricey's Legend status as a player, moving from player to coach doesn't necessarily follow. 'Teaching' is a very different skill from 'doing'. Does Price even have any coaching experience, or interest in doing it? Whereas Strang clearly does, on both counts.

I think hhm's line is that any Zimbabwean who's had the temerity to do anything for another country should simply be cut off from having anything further to do with the game in Zim. Which is as daft an idea as it is short-sighted.

Strang has more coaching cred atm than Price, that is for sure.
