No longer stand out batsman maybe but still our best I think. From a Hamilton Masakadza fan

I still feel it's BRMT @ 1 and Hami @ 2 for now a few more good series for Hami and bad ones for BRMT could change it but not for now .....

I guess this thread might unnecessarily turn into a Hammy vs Taylor thing. Pure class and talent wise, Taylor is definitely ahead. In fact, for me, Williams is ahead of both of them class and talent wise. Of course the former two have executed better.

Taylor all the way. Hammy has only bashed minnows, Taylor has scored against the best in the world.

Williams is our best batsman, Taylor in at second, Hammy at third. Swap Hammy and Taylor around when overseas.

Not playing to many matches or series on a trot has robbed Sean Williams of the opportunity to go through prolonged slumps. He is also not yet proven at Test level, his temperament is still very much in question. In fact, if you look at his two Test appearances you could wonder what all the fuss is about and why we should rate him higher than Vusi.

He's got great hands, plays spin as well as anyone in the side, with the same tendency to bring about his own downfall trying to dominate, and is as susceptible outside off-stump against half decent seamers as the rest of the lot.

All that said, I do so hope that he gets an opportunity to showcase his undoubted talent at the World Cup. I believe ODIs are his strongest suit. At the last T20 WC he wasn't outstanding either.

Talent is one thing, skill is another. The best player on a team is not necessarily the most talented but the one who has the most skill or can display his skill on the most consistent basis. I think Taylor has proven that he is ZIM's best batsman with no current competitor. That's not to say Williams or someone else can't surpass him.

I think the general posters' view of Williams is an issue of the grass being greener on the other side. For example, when Mushangwe was in Mangongo's doghouse, he was regarded by most as Cremer's heir apparent. It is now evident that Mushangwe has a lot of work to do...he is not the finished product yet. He has potential and leggies take time to develop.

Utseya is another. When he was in the side, people wanted him out. Now that he's been banned, he's an awesome spinner and a batsmen who some think can open the batting.

Williams is probably the second best batsman in the current side, maybe equal with Hammy. But I'm not sure he's the messiah many are making him out to be.

I was the main caller for Utseya's head but his form against South Afrixa and Australia plus @ the t20 WC was great and you could even argue career best form, players deserve to be in the team for their current form not their potential so this is why I'll called for Utseya's head but now have changed my tune .....

Williams has the highest percentage of 'innings per 50's' in ODI cricket so this is why we're all proclaiming he is the 'messiah' ( your words not ours ). Plus his bowling has improved out of site and now deserves to be rated as an all rounder not just a part timer ......

I'm talking in general terms. I think there is a Utopian idea that a few changes would totally transform the landscape. I don't think its that easy. If it was a few personell changes is all it would take the Windies to return to the glory of the 80s and for AUS to return to the night of Waugh, Pointing, and McGrath.

The issue is that sustained excellence can really only be mantained by a select few teams and the primary parameter there is size of talent pool. Which is why India will always be a threat. Even then, their away record has been abysmal. That just proves my point that pulling a 180 isn't as easy 'oh let's just drop this guy, fire this coach, and bring in this kid as an opener.'

I mean look at how BD are struggling with their seam attack for 14+ years. Rubel is capable of bowling 90 mph, so is Abul, Shafiul can clock 140 as well. Its not as simple as just throwing guys who have pace and proclaiming them as the next Waqar n Wasim. Sure Taskin will drastically improve the attack, but it ain't gonna be a world beater anytime soon.

Same with the idea that Mangongo is the root cause. He's been coach how long? And were ZIM world beaters under the previous coaches? I concede he may be a bad coach, he may even be a terrible coach. Maybe he's an ex con or a drug lord...point is he is just one of a myriad factors.

Bangladesh have the same problem to a greater or lesser degree. Sometimes we feel the messiah is being left out due to idiotic decisions. But deep down inside we know better (well some of us do).

The beliefe in a drastic improvement with easy changes is the definition of messianic delusion. That's what the biblical/Quranic messiah is...a magic solution requiring very little effort or work.

A lot of things are possible, but very few are actually probable.

Williams is a quality player of spin, I get that. He's also a decent spinner, I get that too. But has he played spinners on turning tracks? Has he played quality spinners on any track? Then, has he played quality spinners on turning tracks? Its totally valid to question Mominul's technique in AUS conditions, I agree, I just think he can hold his own and avg 35-40...but then it must also be valid to question Williams' chances here.
