If you are referring to world class players who could represent a test nation in general, we never had 11 of them at the same time ever anyway. We have never been anywhere close to 11 too.

If you are referring to 11 guys who could play internationally "at the level" WE have been playing historically, even there we have had people making up numbers during the relative glory years. The Carlisles, the Wisharts, the Rennies and the Ebrahims, and even the Campbells of those teams have endured painfully long out of form spells.

Taylor, H Masakadza in the last couple of years of his form, Elton the batsman only version, and a clear headed Sean Williams would have walked into the late 90's early 00's squads too, that way.

So, we have always struggled to put a very compititive 11 on the field regularly anyway. On the plus side, our fast bowling segment has a depth (in terms of potential) that we have probably never had.

One thing I do agree with is that our "quality player base" has reduced from say 40-45 a decade ago (and 30-35 a couple of years back) to around 20-25. U-19 pool has not contributed enough over the years.

Yeah, the young quicks coming through are cause for optimism. I think our seamers might have the edge over India's... sure we didn't bowl well in NZ but we didn't concede any triple centuries, or 350 run partnerships, or 100 overs without a wicket.

Zimbabwe has won as many away Tests since returning to the Test arena as India has :D
