HARARE - Glen View 1 High School prevailed over Roosevelt Girls by eight runs in the inaugural Glen View Pro 10 Girls Cricket final played on Wednesday.

Roosevelt had booked their place in the final last Saturday after accounting for Girls High by three wickets in the first semi-final at Glen View 2 High.

Rain interrupted the second semi-final pitting GV 1 and Morgan last week and was rescheduled to a curtain raiser before the final.

The Glen View side avenged their neighbours’ defeat to Morgan High School after sending the Arcadia-based school packing by 44 runs while chasing 67 runs to win.

In the final, GV1 completed their dominance over Roosevelt after restricting them to 32-4 in reply to their innings total of 40-4.

Glen View 1 spin bowler Ellen Mutungura took three wickets for two runs in two overs as their opponents failed to deal with her spin that received rare assist from the tattered astra turf.

The tournament was an eye opener as it brought about glaring cases of lack of support for the girl child in cricket. Among the problems faced during this tournament was lack of training kit with Morgan High School having to depend on other schools for equipment.

Morgan coach Henry Ziabwa lamented the lack of resources.

“We had an excellent tournament in Glen View, we lost out because it was our first time to play competitively this term but the girls across all the five teams really showed a lot of potential,” Ziabwa told the Daily News yesterday.

Roosevelt coach Giveus Majinjiwa said: “We are grateful to all the schools that made it possible for the girls to participate at this event. The players’ commitment cannot be over emphasised and it is now up to the powers that be to ensure that a lot of input is put towards girls’ cricket so as to strengthen the structures from the grassroots level.”
