Prince Edward beat Churchill in Petra Twenty20 tournament PDF Print E-mail

PRINCE Edward are the Petra Twenty20 cricket champions after edging out Churchill by two runs in the final which turned out to be a thriller at Petra High School in Bulawayo yesterday. In an all Harare schools final, PE managed to defend 130 runs in a contest which was full of twists and runs to be crowned the champions of the fourth edition of the tournament.

Winning the toss and opting to bat, PE posted 130 for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs, opener Shoun Handris top scoring with 41 runs from 36 deliveries, his opening partner Tarisai Musakunda the second highest run scorer with 21 runs.

Churchill, winners of the tournament last year looked like they were going to chase down their target with ease but their task was made harder by the fact that they had been docked one over for their slow over rate when they were fielding which left them with 19 overs in which to reach their victory target.

Going into the last over, Churchill required 10 runs to win. The over, bowled by Luke Jongwe proved to be eventful but it was PE who held on for victory, closing out Churchill by two runs.

For their efforts, PE walked away with the winners shield while Churchill also got a shield.

Joylord Gumbi of Prince Edward took home the fielder of the tournament accolade, Wellington Masakadza from Churchill won the bowler of the tournament award while PE captain Heroneymo Kabvumbura was adjudged the best batsman. The three were presented with the Saleem Manuel trophies.

The player of the tournament prize went to Musakunda who received the Sharne Mayers trophy.

Minister of Education, Sports, Arts and Culture David Coltart presented the award winners with their prizes at an awards ceremony held last night after the final.

Pity the Bulldogs lost. Looks like the Churchill side is becoming weaker and weaker with each passing year. Not so long ago Churchill didn't even consider PE a decent challenge, but how things have changed.

Anyway, I managed to watch bits and pieces of this match on ZBC and a certain Mr Sean Williams was interviewed. Pity the journo didn't ask him the question why isn't he representing Zim. But, he seems to be very much involved with school kids. I wouldn't rule out another Sean Willow return anytime soon...

Young Wellington hasn't been part of any U-19 squads recently, so probably a good reminder to the selectors with the U-19 WC coming up. Musakunda is also a new name, at least to me, and Heroneymo Kabvumbura is a pretty good name as well, if the journo hasn't messed up the spelling.

Picking up from the other thread: Any chance of a demon bowler called "Christchurch Masakadza" wating in the wings. ;)
