Opening post

I think Rainsford is better than a defensive choice. He is next in line after those in the squad imo. Panyangara isn't a defensive choice either, just a poor one.

I must say his form in that last three or four innings leading up to this game have been umimpressive, and he does seem to choke on the big occassion as well. Back to the drawing board for him, and back to Chakabva I guess for the selectors. So probably Taylor will have to bat at three for this match, and two bowlers still have to give way...

I now see and understand what we mean about yoyo mentality of fans...Chakabva was the source of anguish, and one decent knock (a fine effort at that) and he is the flavor of the match and yes you guessed it he is first on our team sheet....

Well, thanks for that Flower. ;) Was a bit lost on how I was goona respond to the above qsn from betterdays

The payangara debate must stop now. The guy has only ever got one five wicket haul at first class level in his many matches. If he aint ripping it up domestically then why the hell should he don the zimbo shirt?

Rainsford I am in agreement with you, he deserves more chances definetly and hopefully should get a look in soon

I agree that Panyangara,(and indeed Duffin) aren't doing enough to make their inclusion in the national team a formality, but then again, it's not like Rainsford(my other favorite) is streets ahead of Panyangara. They are not striking enough! However, one thing you have to take into consideration is that both of them are seasoned campaigners who have the ability to cramp up batsmen. Which is why a lot of top quality bastmen in our local league struggle to get them away, and play them with caution(yet treat the youngsters with disdain which is why they often succumb to them instead - overconfidence). Now that's something, the other youngsters cannot do at international level, because they are simply not skilled enough!

You allude to Panyangara's not being able to take bags of 5-fors. One can't escape the fact that, just like centuries for batsmen, they are crucial. That's something you arrive at by assessing his overall FC career. To me, Tinashe's figures all round reflect someone of class, by Zim standards. Think of our batsmen - none of that have 45+ averages, in fact, even their FC averages wouldn't normaly be looked at twice by selectors, but we still trust them to deliver, which they ocaasionally do! Those youngsters who do have the stats like Shingi, Chatara, Jarvis, Vitori, Craig, Meth & Forster have proven to be inept at this level, why - they lack experience and maturity!

Quit giving Tinashe a hard time, he is after-all, comparatively the most successful Zim opening bowler! An area in which both your sweethearts, Jarvis & Vitori have already proven to be inferior to him. unlike most, at least he does the job in the only chance(innings) Zim gets :!:

No go watch our greenhorns show NZ just how superior they are to Panyangara & Rainsford, then come back and tell me how pathetic these 'seniors' are! ;)

Tongue in cheek right?!...this after a whole THREE (3) games, and the bulk of his 5 wickets in one of his 3 outings opening!... (ALL of a grand ONE(1) more than Vitori's 4 in his first 2 outings....now that's streets ahead....and who said you were arlarmist hhm?

You know what FlowerPower, my query needs to be rectified! No right-minded statistician includes Bangladesh as opposition(nor Zim for that matter) in any assessment of note. There! Now that looks about right don't you think? ;)

Whichever way you want to look at it, Duffin & Panyangara have better records than all of this lot respectively, soon to be joined by Eddie Rainsford! :D

You are building a very impressive CV on this forum, hhm. I guess there are a few propaganda ministries out there who cherish such skills. Do they follow the cricket in Damascus?

Here's a thought. To hhm, failure is a only a promise of greater things to come in the distant future. Panyangara recorded figures of 3-101 and 1-120 in 2004, none of those wickets falling before the opposition had scored less than 399 runs (and naturally a second innings was not needed). So should we be lucky enough to see NZ score 700-odd for 3 decl., with Vitori taking 1-120, we will find hhm clamouring for his return to the side in approx. 2019.

Unfortunately they don't. Thankfully, I'm having a cup of tea with Bashar tomorrow morning, and I'll try and persuade him to build two state of the art grounds, so Pakistan can move their base there(instead of that ring of undemocratic elements of the Yanks - UAE, Bahrain, Saudi & Qatar). The ECB will be thrilled that they don't have to be battered on such shores anymore. While I'm at, I may be be able to convince him to signup to the ZCF too! Telling him BobbyM, Chavez & Mahmoud are regulars, should have him calling for his ipad at that instant! Wish me luck! :)

:D

But please explain to him that "batting" only refers to putting willow to leather. Or else I fear he will use the grounds for more sinister purposes.

Far from it eugene. A genuine assessment will reveal my love for Zim cricket. Unfortunately, I think the selectors are inept, biased & confounded, and some fans are clouded with emotion. It's not a celebration of the failures of our players, but rather the highlighting of reality. You don't want to admit it, but you know they will disappoint!

Common sense dictates that, in the absence of Mpofu&Vusi, a team of:

Duffin, Tino, Taylor, Matsi, Hami, Ewing(c), Taibu(wk), Elton, Panyangara, Rainsford, Price;

would do better on this tour, than:

Tino, Hami, Taylor(c), Taibu(c), Waller, Forster, Meth, Cremer, Shingi, Jarvis, Vitori

I will not throw in half-baked youngsters, while we still have excellent players, who are more mature, experienced and have age on their side (26-30), simply because we decide they are over the hill and inferior! All our future series will prove the opposite.

A mere glance at the allround struggles of the English Lions in Bangladesh (second string ban), comprising of the bright youngsters of English cricket, who are generally, also the best performing players in their County cricket, proves that this particular team of ours is in no way superior to Bangladesh, and would probably get whitewashed there. So all this joy over a Test return win against Bangladesh, clearly fooled many!

From what you're saying in your own naughty way foreignfield, let's face it, our bowlers simply don't have the pace to talk about. Jarvis, Vitori etc, simply can't generate and sustain the kind of pace that will trouble batsmen, so they need to hone other skills which will see them having more success with the new ball. So yes, in another 2-4 seasons, Vitori might be a more qualified bowler, deserving to strut his stuff at this stage. Right now he's no De Lange/Cummins, nor Philander(pace - class), just a lucky man aginst a lethargic Bangladesh!

English players have always struggled against spin in sub continent conditions .Their Test team has just proven that vs India and now Pakistan......

So using England Lions as a comparison will not do justice .

Matsi, Chigs excellent? Now there's a charitable assessment if ever i heard one. How come Matiskinyeri never did much in over 100 O/D games if he was so good? And Chigumbura would have to be one of the most useless cricketers i've ever seen, a "all-rounder" who can't bat or bowl.

Neither does Panyangara.

I am not swayed by the payanagara argument, I mantain my stance in that if he was getting plenty of five wicket hauls as meth masakadza and chatara have been doing then surely he would be in the squad. he must rip it up at domestic level before he dons the zimbabwe shirt, there are plenty of others far more deserving than him of a call up at present..Lets not romanticise the notion that just because someone has experience that it translates to inspired performances because it doesnt...look at maragwede now if you want an example someone who has been round the block but has just not been firing of late
