Glen Querl for Zimbabwe

Opening post

I think there should be a concerted push from ZC to get Querl into the side or at least an updated final answer as to where he stands. I would think that if he was selected in the side he would take the opportunity as I haven't seen enough evidence to suggest otherwise apart from him briefly eluding to not wanting to risk his Devon contract.

Agreed.

The man has played 11 Logan Cup games, and taken 68 wickets @ 14. If ever a player has been banging on the door for selection it is him... Not to mention his batting average of over 50! And experience of playing abroad...

Glen Querl! Seriously speaking when I watched this guy I noticed that his wrist position when he leaps is almost like Blignaut's. I suppose when you don't pay sufficient attention it does give the impression that he chucks on release. Andy was never called, I doubt Querl will be called, so it's safe to say he's a legit seamer.

That aside, is he really better than the tried and trusted options we have, by that I mean the young supposedly quicker new generation(who often proved to be expensive? Cannot say, but that list includes a lot of players(Shingi, Vitori, Jarvis, Ncube, Chatara, LTGM) some of them are ahead in the queue and deserve a SUSTAINED chance before him(Shingi, Chatara), i.e. at least as many innings as Jarvis&Vitori - the bulk of which were appalling.

Jarvis is imited, but will be picked anyway. To me Vitori is the most dangerous and naturally talented of that lot, but he's not pushed on. I maintain that he's not ready, and we should rightly leave him out. Ncube, been out of sorts. Chatara needs a few A games, which just as Vitori&Jarvis were selected during the Aus-A tour, should also be the basis for Querl's inclusion. Shingi holds an advantage in that he's more durable - maintains his pace throughout, and bowls as well as all of those options, if not better as we witnessed in NZ. No reason for him to be forced out of the squad.

When I watched Querl bowl he was genuinely ordinary and without threat. Having said that his performances have been outstanding. Unless he comes out and says he wants to stay in Zimbabwe and fight to play for Zimbabwe, I don't care what he does in our Logan Cup, slot into the pecking order and wait your turn! In any event, Chatara should and will don our white jersey before Querl does!

Who ever is selected, we'll back them all the way, but I think we (the ZCF members) just want to see a couple of fresh, young faces in the side after the humiliation of the T20 world cup and our last test outing in Kiwi land. If Querl is selected great, he deserves it, if not, fine, we have others like Hhm rightly mentioned (Chatara, Vitori, LGM) that we would gladly welcome to the fold. I just hope we handle our young fast bowlers well in the next decade or so, these guys are the future of our bowling stocks.

Querl needs to be selected, we have no other good options for the allrounders slot. Chigumbura is a bust and the others are glorified club players.

i dont think we have an all rounders spot anymore now that taibu is gone.

This is when we need someone like Ali, Grant, or Heath to call him up and convince him to choose Zimbabwe. Querl is a promising young player but I think Zimbabwe is a much more realistic path to a successful international career than England.

Well he can join the rest of players like ballance, ervine cameron etc who cant be arsed playing for Zimbabwe.

Seriously if the guy doesn't want to play, I'd much prefer to see a guy like Chitara or or even panyangara in the side, guys who WANT to be there

I would rather have Querl playing for Zimbabwe, doubts and all, than some other trundler. Beggars can't be choosers.

the real question would chitara and panyangara choose to go to england and play county if THEY had the choice?

They may be no different to querl

food for thought.

At the end of the day, playing cricket's a job like any other - playing solely for Zim, be it domestic / international, doesn't seem to be exactly a lucrative job. When ZC can even afford to pay people in the first place. Under current circumstances, I really can't hold it against people if they decide to go for something that's halfway secure and pays a decent amount of money.

What ZC can do to address that, I don't know. They need incoming full tours from the like of England and Australia to have a hope of making profit, and that's not going to happen for a long time. Most domestic cricket is a moneypit, the Stanbic just about breaks even, and incoming tours by the likes of Bangladesh or New Zealand cost them big bucks. There's no chance of the money they need to 'fix' things coming to them any time soon. (Things would be better if ZC didn't have a mountain of debt to service. I wonder if the solution may be to let ZC go bust, taking the debt with them, and form a new governing body to take over...)

Nothing we didn't know in that recent article. The cards are up in the air, let's see where they fall...

theyare the second biggest sporting body in zim. they should be able to afford paying players a decent wage.

at least through sponsorship if nothing else. i think its just mismanagement.

most players these days just want to have played test cricket, play in a world cup, and have one or 2 achievements to tell there mates at a pub in ten years time (i bowled sachin leg stump!.....i hit steyn for a 6 over his head twice... etc) after those initial goals are realised...players tend to not want to continue to play for just a meat pie and a beer, and will go elsewhere, either through cricketing or a decent career. can you blame?

Think maehara is right...just let ZC go bust and form the 'ZCF' instead. start fresh....

I can just picture the selection committee meetings if ZCF were given control.

Really don't want to go there. :)

Pitiful reasoning. typical!

Refreshing reasoning!

I still stand by what I said - "Unless he comes out and says he wants to stay in Zimbabwe and fight to play for Zimbabwe, I don't care what he does in our Logan Cup, slot into the pecking order and wait your turn!" More than this news being sad for me, I'm actually elated, the chaff continues to be cut off from the wheat! :D

The Bang & SL Cricket Boards are technically insolvent. Heck almost all of the key national governments worldwide(plus states/provinces within them) are actually insolvent themselves! La Liga, the Premiership, Serie A plus a few clubs in the Bundesliga(not to mention the frightening state of clubs in lower divisions of those leagues)) are all drowning in debt, but no one dare suggest such! There is absolutely no logic behind that thinking. For a genuine Zim supporter, it borders on sadistic. Smirks of something silly I read recently "VWV [director Warren Stewart]...says the ANC is "factually, commercially and legally insolvent", so should be wound up." Not feasible. Don't wonder in that direction! The only way SLCB & BCB recover is through tours and TV rights attached to them, the same should apply to ZC!

I trust Rahul Dravid's speech at the Bradman Oration is still fresh in your mind:

The news about the money may well overpower all else, but along with it, our cricket is full of stories the outside world does not see. Television rights generated around Indian cricket, are much talked about. Let me tell you what the television - around those much sought-after rights - has done to our game.

A sport that was largely played and patronised by princes and businessmen in traditional urban centres, cities like Bombay, Bangalore, Chennai, Baroda, Hyderabad, Delhi - has begun to pull in cricketers from everywhere.

As the earnings from Indian cricket have grown in the past 2 decades, mainly through television, the BCCI has spread revenues to various pockets in the country and improved where we play. The field is now spread wider than it ever has been, the ground covered by Indian cricket, has shifted.

Playing for India completely changes our lives. The game has given us a chance to pay back our debt to all those who gave their time, energy and resources for us to be better cricketers: we can build new homes for our parents, get our siblings married off in style, give our families very comfortable lives.

The Indian cricket team is in fact, India itself, in microcosm. A sport that was played first by princes, then their subordinates, then the urban elite, is now a sport played by all of India.

On our way to the Indian team, we know of so many of our team-mates, some of whom may have been equally or more talented than those sitting here, who missed out. When I started out, for a young Indian, cricket was the ultimate gamble - all or nothing, no safety nets. No second chances for those without an education or a college degree or second careers. Indian cricket's wealth now means a wider pool of well paid cricketers even at first-class level.

Sit back and let Zim go through it own transition. India's one stretches from the early 90s. Check back in 2030!

As for sponsorship, I'm sure Gillarrd & Cameron are itching to step in. Last I heard, they've offered hefty tax cuts to all their MNCs who sponsor the game in Zim. And Giles Clarke is certainly vocal about funding regular bilateral ties between his county sides and our franchises. Plenty of willing partners in the thriving Zim economy falling over themselves for the opportunity as well! ;)
