Opening post

We all know that Cap'n Taylor failed his fitness test. Anyone know what the fitness test consists of? Because there was another chap on the field yesterday, Tino Mawoyo, who didn't look as if he would pass any fitness test I'd expect of a professional sportsman. That boundary chase when Waller overtook him despite a considerable head-start was hilarious!

I agree, that was funny to watch.

The again, if anyone would win a prize for being the player who has put the most effort into his fitness in the last few years, that would be Tino Mawoyo.

Have you seen the kind of stuff people go through to lose weight as much as he did and still fail to succeed?

Looks like he needs to keep working...

Agreed, but as a professional sportsman, he can still do better. I do wonder what kind of coordination there is between the franchises and ZC regarding national team players and their fitness goals. We have the case of Taylor, we have Tino. Any of you seen how portly Hami seems with respect to a few years ago?

I was thinking that as well...

Fortunately there are a number of decent athletes in the side as well. Chibhabha and Chakabva come to mind.

Don't have too much of a problem with Tino & Taylor's tummies. They are fit enough. We don't want to go down the route that Aus and some others have where the fitness gurus are doing such a great job that the players are always injured.

Agree there. Hats off to Mawoyo to have motivated himself to get back in shape (sort of) to make an international return, We can be rest assured that he will continue to work on it with same rigor day in and day out.

That must have been funny! But at least it shows one good thing the guys knowing each others weaknesses and compensating. Good team work. On another note i think its easier for Waller to do that for Tino cos he knows how much of an effort he has put in to get that fit. Thats why it is imperative that taylor, thinks more about the team when he approaches this fitness thing, and at least APPEAR to be putting an effort.

Actually it did work out pretty good. Tino set off, only to be overtaken by the galloping horse Waller. Waller put in the save, popped it up for the waiting Tino, who efficiently dispatched it back to the stumps.

People seem to be getting rather defensive about Tino. As a man who likes his beer and boerewors, I speak from experience when I say that it's not an easy thing to get back into shape. I also speak from experience when I say that a long term approach to fitness is necessary. Constant monitoring, testing, goal-setting are necessary. For me, it's crazy having an approach where everyone is tested just before the tour with the threat of an axe hovering above their head, if nothing is done throughout the season. Looking at some of the bellies on show, I doubt this is being done properly.
