Opening post


One loss is Mark Vermeulen, who at the age of 35 decided to retire after an unsuccessful tour of Bangladesh with Zimbabwe A. It is fortunate for the team that Lamb has come in to take his place.

I'd never classified Mark Vermuelen as a second rate player myself, a bit unfortunate on the behaviour front at times but he was twice the player Lamb will ever be

NOOO! I wanted to see him play another season of first class cricket :cry: It truly is the end of an era, as we have now lost our last link to the side and era where we were actually a very competitive side. Hope he enjoys what ever he's doing in his retirement.

Funny as when i saw this my first though was Sloandog will be devastated ;)

So its a goodbye to the "Last Rhodesian", however i find it comforting that on the same day we found out the news of the retirement of the "Last Rhodesian", the "First Zimbabwean" Keith Dabengwa scored a century and passed 4000 FC runs, must be fate!!!

Mate I'm gutted. I have no idea why I was such a big fan of Vermuelan, I guess I just liked his persona 😂

In my opinion the FC system will be less off without him there as he was one of the few guys with such a wealth of experience. I suppose Greg Lamb will fill the void in that regard, but on playing ability it's definitely none comparable

It wasn't the fairy tale ending - there was no last ball six in bad light with only one wicket in hand and one ball left in the innings in a match deciding the #1 Test team in the world.

But I don't think we should feel too sad, because nobody in Zimbabwe cricket gets a fairy tale ending. Ray Price didn't even get a farewell match.

Vermeulen said in an interview a few months ago that he wanted to play Test cricket one more time for Zimbabwe (or something to that effect) - and he did. He officially completed the most unlikely comeback in cricket history.

I think if we were told back in 2007 that he'd bow out with his last match being a Test against South Africa we would have called that a fairy tale ending.
