FORMER national cricket team right-arm leg spinner Graeme Cremer dropped the cricket bat for a golf club last year and wants to pursue a professional golf career.Cremer played his last official cricket match in April last year in a Test match against Bangladesh.

“I left cricket because of the money issues at the time, I just thought it was never going to get better with Zimbabwe Cricket,” said Cremer.

“I turned to golf because I enjoy it and love spending hours at the course. I used to play a lot of golf when I was young, and then did not play for ages because of cricket, but now I have a lot of time to play golf and really get back into it.

“I am at a disadvantage, starting golf a bit late, but I try to make sure I practice harder than everyone else to make up for it.”

The 27-year-old was a regular feature in the national cricket team starting line-up in all three formats – Test, ODI and Twenty20.

He is one of the best efficient fielders in Zimbabwe and boast of 300 first-class wickets at an average of 27.97 runs.

“At the moment I am enjoying my golf a lot and I cannot see myself being involved in Zimbabwe Cricket again,” said Cremer.

“The players always get the wrong end of the stick which is sad. I feel that I must give golf my best shot now, as I really love it, I considered playing cricket outside Zimbabwe but the family is content and comfortable here.”

Cremer is still an amateur with a two-handicap and has his sights on a scratch in the near future.

“I am serious about it, was just playing for fun a few months ago, and thought to myself I should try competitive golf as I saw my game growing, my first goal now is to qualify for the Zim Open in April and then go from there.

“Anyone can make a living from golf as long as you can shoot under par,” he said.
