SURREY’S PG ACADEMY PLAYER OF THE YEAR SAM CURRAN HAS BEEN NAMED IN THE ENGLAND DEVELOPMENT SQUAD FOR 2014-15.
Curran, the younger brother of Surrey fast bowler Tom Curran, has been rewarded for an excellent season that saw him make the breakthrough into the Surrey Second XI and also play a starring role as Surrey shared the national U17 title with Lancashire.
The all-rounder was rewarded for his contribution when he was named the Pemberton Greenish Academy Player of the Year at the club End of Season Awards in the Long Room on September 16th.
The 18-man EDP squad features players from across the Under-17 and Under-19 age groups, and represents the first intake of players to be overseen by ECB’s new Head of the England Development Programme, Andy Hurry.
The 2014-2015 EDP squad will now take part in a series of short training camps at the National Cricket Performance Centre (NCPC) in Loughborough, before embarking on an overseas development camp to the subcontinent in December, and touring in Australia in March-April ahead of the start of the English season.
England Development Programme Chairman of Selectors, David Graveney, said: “The composition of the 2014-2015 EDP squad represents a change in direction for the England Development Programme with the Under-19 and Under-17 age groups fully combined for the first time. This move has created one smaller squad of players for Andy Hurry and the rest of the coaching staff at the NCPC to work with more closely, and simultaneously gives the county academies greater ownership in developing their young players moving forwards.
“We believe that we have selected an outstanding 18-man EDP squad, and I am especially excited by the wealth of young talent currently coming through the development pathway. This group of players will now get the opportunity to take part in a training camp on the subcontinent before Christmas, followed by a challenging tour to Australia in March-April next year, providing two fantastic learning experiences of playing in contrasting conditions and environments.”

Not really relevant to Zim cricket but I've watched Sam play quite a few games and there's no doubting that he's a great talent. This selection will see him make their U19 WC squad and it's the start of what promises to be a good (great?) career. Your Dad would be proud.

I think if the island develops a leak and sinks into the Atlantic Ocean he may contemplate a life here on $500 a month. I haven't seen him play for a while but there's no reason to doubt that he's just getting better and better. Fast left arm seam and a quality left hand bat!! It will be interesting to see if he makes their U19 squad. I don't know how their system works or what players they have but I'd suggest that if he makes the WC team as a 17 year old it would indicate that he's going to be a top player and will possibly go onto represent England one day. Ballance's central contract is around 700 000 pounds a year before match fees, allowances and endorsements, which is a good incentive for him to hang in with a system that has treated him well. I think there's a chance that both he and his older brother, Tom, may both play at the same time. I'd like to see what odds the bookies would offer on that.

I just heard some interesting piece of news from one of mates at uni. He was an academy player at Surrey before he got released last season in order to accommodate tom curran. He said a few interesting things in the car journey back(
. He's extremely arrogant and cocky
. Is lazy and does not work hard at all.
. Smokes like a chimney
. Has no interest in ever going back to Zimbabwe in a cricket capacity.
However I asked about Sam. He said Sam will one day play for either Zimbabwe or England. It surprised me a lot because you would have thought it would be England hands down, but my mate said that Sam is extremely pro Zimbabwean and would choose a career in the red if he had the choice. He also said the death of their father Kevin had aassive effect on them, especially tom. Inbox me if you want to know more

From what I have seen of Tom he looks like the real deal, almost Dale Steyn esc in his action

Yea you can't deny his pace and action are solid, but cam said that Sam will literally be 3 times the player that Tom is. Genuinely left arm fast apparently has a fantastic technique with the stick

HARARE - Sam Curran, the son of the late Zimbabwe national cricket team coach Kevin, has been named in the England Development Squad.
The 16-year-old Sam, an all-rounder playing for Surrey PG Academy, caped a fine year by securing a place in the 18-man squad for the 2014-2015 season.
He was named Surrey PG Academy Player of the Year prior to be selected for national duty at the end of season awards in September.
His elder brother Tom, a seamer plays for Surrey’s first team.
Former Zimbabwe international and coach Kevin passed away in October 2012 after he suffered a attack while jogging in his home town of Mutare as he prepared for domestic franchise match pitting his Mashonaland Eagles side against hosts Mountaineers.
Mid West Rhinos supremo and cousin to the late Kevin, Kenyon Ziehl paid tribute to the former Zimbabwe international for cultivating a cricketing culture in his sons.
“Kevin was both a father and coach to his boys and more often than not, their life revolved around the cricket nets,” Ziehl told the Daily News.
“He would have been a happier man to see his sons thriving at this young age but God had other plans. I know the boys’ attitude and with continuous hard work only the sky will be the limit for them.”
The current recognition for the young Sam sets the platform for an England national career and Zimbabwe look set to lose the talented cricketer.
“Not many young boys have done what Sam has achieved at his age, we are very proud of him,” said Ziehl.
“You never want to say never,” Ziehl said of Sam’s prospects of playing for Zimbabwe junior age groups.
“But I think the guys would want to try and achieve as greater heights as possible but like I said you may never say never and a good example is Craig Ervine who is now back in the national side.
“Home is home and there’s none better than home.”
The late Kevin spent nearly two decades playing English County cricket for Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire before his retirement in 1999.
