That explanation is not good enough for the Takashinga founding director who told The Zimbabwe Mail: “That is some thinking by some people who do not understand sport. Did Jose Mourinho play football at the highest level? That is just one example; it doesn’t mean you have to play sport at the highest level to be a good coach.”
“Zimbabwe has been coached by people who have won as players at the World Cup like Geoff Marsh, who coached the likes of Alistair Campbell who are talking too much these days, but they still lost matches.”
Mangongo suspects there were people who plotted for his downfall from the day he was appointed as the country’s first black head coach.
Mangongo was criticised for his tough approach in coaching the senior team, something that is believed to have affected the players’ confidence.
“Those are just rumours peddled by haters. It did not start now. Even the day before we beat Australia there were reports in the papers that the players were going on strike that day yet they played and won,” he said.
“These are players I groomed using the same methods, the players I won matches with in Zimbabwe A using the same methods and we beat Australia and had guys like Hamilton Masakadza and Regis Chakabva doing well with their individual performances.
“We also brought in Solomon Mire who is a gem. “Alistair Campbell in his role as a commentator kept attacking left, right and centre, commenting that Zimbabwe would be like Kenya, what was he trying to insinuate? These are the same people who had problems with cricket in Zimbabwe and they left. Now they want to come back?”
After his hiring and firing within five months, Mangongo believes his employers have lost patience with coaches who are expected to produce results with a team that has for long been the ICC full members’ punching bag.
“He (new coach) needs to pray because he will be fired after the World Cup if he doesn’t win games,” he said before adding, “Zimbabwean cricketers are a good bunch, the boys work so hard and I know they will give it their best and hopefully they can surprise one or two big teams.”

Calling Mangongo Zimbabwe's "first black head coach" is a line has been used by many. It's not the case. Walter Chawaguta may not have covered himself with glory, but he was most certainly there first.
