Opening post

You have 8 Harare clubs and 6 Bulawayo clubs feed a 4 pointed franchise system. Roughly one in 5 club players thereabout play first class professionally.

Sadly I would argue that Bulawayo only has four first league sides?
Sadly I would argue that Bulawayo only has four first league sides?

Maybe even 3??! :D

We need to focus on our strengths which is a high percentage of excellent cricketers produced in a small player pool.(yes we do lose most of them to other nations) But if we could nurture them into high performance centres and give them guaranteed short/medium and long term goals. Then we could easily be within the top 8.
For too long we have been focusing on quantity of cricketers in the province instead of the all important quality of cricketers.

The facts on the ground is that there are growing murmurs and grumblings from associate provinces of being marginalized and being excluded from main stream cricket. There is some real talent in the associates where i believe that we could unveil that much needed 140+ bowler from Chipinge or Hwange. The club system in Harare has four competitive sides which have contributed to the Eagles and Mountaineers setup. This years competitiveness within the Vigne Cup has seen the Eagles dominate and win all three trophies on offer. The concept is to have the league run concurently with the Franchise season, have games played through out the season and use players stats as part of the selection basis. Closing the gap in Franchise is to have at least 4 rounds of FC cricket and at least the same number round of 50 over games should help close the gap between Franchise and International cricket

They are extremely marginalised. I think this competition is an excellent concept. Zimdoggy, I'm suggesting that it should have FC status.

Also, 4 rounds (If maintaining only 4 franchises) of FC and 50 over games is essential in my view. 6 games isn't remotely sufficient. Double would probably be about right. 5 teams with 3 rounds seems the perfect balance to me. Like it was when franchise cricket started.

Doesn't bowl anymore; was always only a handy batter rather than a dangerous one.
Was only ever going to make the side as an allrounder, probably only in the limited over games

Which basically means he is useless as of now. And he is not bowling these days. Marumaesque.

He was a decent prospect as a bowling allrounder. Not so much as a specialist batsman. That said, he has contributed well for the Eagles in the 2nd half of their Logan Cup campaign, and he is a prolific 6 hitter.

Waller is basically RUBBISH dosent bowl dosnt bat long innings can only slog not an athletic fielder, not a great team mate, a great big baby who needs diapers when not selected. very arrogant and thinks he should be captain with no leadership skills. Oh and i shake my head at why they even bothered let him back into the FC system after his failed attempt to migrate to Ireland he should just bloody bugger back to Ireland and run a pub

Ignoring all the personality related stuff, which I am in no position to comment on... He has 218 runs in 6 Logan Cup innings. Averaging 37 with 3 50s, and 14 6s (!!). This too for a side who appear on course to win the title at the moment. "Rubbish" would appear to be wide of the mark.

The scores are against lesser attacks and if he wants to be a good cricketer to play for Zimbabwe he needs to suck up the pain and bloody bowl and bat for hundresds if you had said he scored 3 Logan cup hundreds yes i would now call him average but he must be lumped with the average bunch of players collecting USD800 monthly checks. The truth of the matter is that Nathan is quite far if not even a dream away from the selectors minds like a lot of players. The gap between the Franchise and National team is huge case in point Slugs double hundred last week and Chakabvas back to back hundreds thats the standard i expect.

Fair enough. I'm not suggesting he should expect any national recognition any time soon. Not sure that anyone else was either.

My growing frustration is with the comfort levels of a number of our potential national team players who will help us in the transition phase after the loss of what i believe would have been out best under 19 group this year. The level of mediocrity in the FC system is alarming to the extent that

1. we dont have guys bowling 140 a will we
2. We dont have spinners who are a real threat on any local surface
3. We dont have guys outside the National Team guys who are scoring hundreds and pushing for spots in the national team.

We have come to accept that the poor performances as our what is normal but in truth the level that our FC is in my eyes not a good a some top 4 club cricket or just above provincial cricket. I hope the associate provincial cricket in the winter starting in April will unveil some hungry talent that will raise the stakes for Franchise selection. I wont celebrate or praise mediocre milestones like Bothwell Chapungu who took 90 innings to get a FC 100, Thabo Mboyi after 36 matches and pssibly 72 innings takes his first fiive for but still to pass 50 FC wickets. We have the Foster Mutizwa and Fat Tino Mawoyos who are just blocking the path of the Murray's Snyders, Ives Zambukos of this country from playing. No more mediocre cricket we need standards as high as the Aussies

Can you tell a little more about this?

A bridge between Club and Franchise cricket has long been a necessity, could this be it? Also, would there be any kind of "promotion" available to the province that wins this competition.

Hopefully we will be able to see some scores from these matches.

The associate members f ZC will be playing over 7 or 8 weeks of 3 day and 1 day cricket with T20's over a weekend . The plan is to spread the game in associate provinces which include Mash Central , West and East and Mat South and Masvingo. The plan is to give local players in the associate provnces a chance to develop and prepared for a step up to franchise. The best result could possibly see a new franchise be supported based on its player base , potential community involvement and sponsorship support by local businesses in the area. My money is in Mash Central

Excellent stuff. A 5th franchise is much needed in my opinion. Would any current franchise players associated with any of these "associate" provinces be available? I'm thinking of the likes of Vitori and Mutumbami, who could potentially represent Masvingo? This could raise the standard, and give a more accurate reflection of the relative playing standards in the provinces in question.

I hope to see ZC publish the scorecards for this tournament. Seems like a sensible and important initiative from ZC. Hopefully it succeeds.
