But just to throw a silly one at you, Hoggy (Matthew Hoggard), was an aweful ODI bowler but phenominal Test bowler (being an Aussie I'm sure you remember him, Simon Jones and Hammy (Steve "I dont like touring" Harmison)....my point is we can't use his ODI track to exclude him from test, and besides I'm sure you get what my figures are trying to say, a horrible series (almost 50% of his stats) vs a rampant SA is enough to messup a 7 match record, heck Nicolson and Mpofu also got spanked...

[EDIT] Just had a look at his innings analysis, it would appear the Proteas weren't the only ones to take him to the cleaners, so did, WI (being taken off after 3 overs after going at over 12), going at over 9 vs Ireland, yep his only sub 5 economy rate was vs the mighty Tigers of Bangladesh!...but he is a strike bowler and if he can work on his economy he should be a good addition (even more so if his batting could come good as an allrounder)....just had to be honest and add the non flattering part...agreed, maybe we should ease him through...well spotted BRMT...or was that coincidental! ;)

It's too early for Shingi to face NZ, unless an injury opens up a spot for him. I actually like him, even in ODIs because he tries new stuff but he's got variety. I have a *tiny* problem with such concrete mindset approach, i.e "its too early for Shingi"...mind you I still stand by the trio we have hasn't done anything wrong and Shingi will have to "work" past these 3...but to say "its too early" I don't quite get that. Doubt we would have had a Vitori if we went that way...I say let the form player play. If Vitori is better than Shingi, play Vitori, but if Shingi is performing, why not? ...and yes I know its also about combinations, and getting a settled side...my point is against being stuck in a concrete cast mindset...

Your point is taken but we don't have 3 or 5 match Test series, we play one offs. If we had proper tours, BD and Pak would've accounted for 6 matches at least, that's about 12 innings (being optimistic here) for us to look closely at Jarvis and Vitori. But we don't have that luxury, we picked our initial team carefully after involving everyone in a camp for weeks on end. So, I say let's stick with it. Shingi is actually quite lucky: if he breaks through it means he'll be playing Test matches, that's not option that was available before, so he should accept that it's going to be tougher to get in, as it should be we are a Test playing nation now.
